How much do you spend on shopping?

My husband read in the paper recently that an average family of 4 spend £240 on groceries a month (which I think is rubbish!!) I have a family of 5 (and a dog) and spend £500. My husband is now thinking of reducing mine!!! Everything I cook is from scratch, I don't buy packet foods. What do other people spend?

The figure is just an average, there will be families who spend more than that and families that spend less than that.

Families where both parents are earning a good wage will spend more on groceries than a family where both parents are out of work, or on the minimum wage.

  • My husband read in the paper recently that an average family of 4 spend £240 on groceries a month ......

I guess I am below average then. I spend around £490-£500 per month on everything..... rent (housing association so it's low but at £252 per month it's over half of said budget), bills, food, public transport (although my own travel is free due to disabled bus pass), clothing, cleaning products, cosmetics etc... No debts to pay off as we don't do credit.
We live comfortably enough, spare income goes into savings accounts & will one day build up enough to buy ourselves a house so we can get a foot on the property ladder, in theory at least.

We spend about £120 a week, there's 2 of us. That's cleaning products, alcohol etc included.

I spend roughly £60 per week (for 2 of us) and that includes all fresh home made food and includes alchohol ... no packet food... we eat healthily! I used to easily spend £80 per week, but my husband lost his job and we are now on a low income so I use the slow cooker for casserols that last 2-3 days and buy everything that's on special offer and reduced items only. We do without the things that are overpriced and only have these when on special offer. I shop around and budget... it's now a case of having to and you can do it :T I don't know what we spent our money on before!!
  • We spend £50 - £60 a week for two of us. I cook everything from scratch but we do buy lots of luxury things. More costly fruit (but always from the market so cheaper) such as peaches, strawberries, cherries etc and I only buy organic chicken (so don't have whole chickens very often), British outdoor reared or organic pork as well as organic milk, butter, tinned toms and some organic cereals. This also includes the odd few bottles of cider or the occasional bottle of wine and all cleaning products. We eat very well.:D

Oh yes and cleaning products/shampoo and conditioner etc etc within our £60 budget. I buy the expensive ones that are on offer, ie CIF when it's £1 and expensive shampoo when it's £1 - £2. Expensive toilet rolls/washing powder/Comfort on promotion etc etc etc........... and of course anything with a yellow reduced sticker... and cook it/freeze it :j
