Feeding a family of 4 for £2 Challenge

Hi everyone

I am wondering if it is possible to create a decent and filling meal for £2, and was wondering if anyone had any brilliant ideas.
I love looking at the recipes on here and the food challenges.

So I am wondering if I can buy all ingredients to feed 4 for £2 or even less.

I was going to suggest a £1 but with food being so expensive £2 gives more choice.

Just the cost of a stew pack of veg which would make a very thick and filling soup for one meal, or enough for at least two days with some bread and butter. :) I live off soup like this through winter weekdays...though I jazz mine up with stuff....a shake of tobasco, a dollop of yoghurt, a bunch of coriander .....

Its not something I'd do everyday with children unless I had some left over source of protein too, or was sure they were getting protein/fats and minerals in other meals.
  • Yes, I think it definitely can be done but I doubt you could achieve it by shopping for individual meals although it should be achieveable over a longer period like month by careful meal-planning and batch-cooking.

Have a look at the cheap-family-recipes.org website for some excellent and inexpensive ways you could do it. They say you can feed a family of four for £100 a month which breaks down to a little over £3 a day for three meals but it probably takes some forward-planning and a little effort.

Cheesy champ and beans..... a firm favourite in our family. Works out at well under 2 quid.
Basically mash, few slices mature cheddar mixed in ( if you grate the cheese, you lose most of it, if you put it in slices, you get nice 'cheesy' bits). Add milk to make it nice and creamy, little mountain of it in a bowl and pour some beans over the top. Extremely filling and real comfort food.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

    Homemade pizza!

Most pasta dishes are very cheap too (especially as value pasta is currently about 20p for 500g bag - enough to feed 5 people minimum) so you could do a pasta bake with tins of chopped toms, herbs, garlic, cheese, cooking bacon (also great value).

A homemade quiche is always a winner in my house. I make my own shortcrust pastry, then you can make whichever filling you want. Mr S does a bag of frozen bacon bits for £2, but there are 4 bags inside that, so 50p each. Fry off one bag of those, scatter on the part baked base and cover with a mix of 2 eggs and milk and maybe a bit of parsley, and you have a lovely quiche lorraine!
Less than a pound and will do us for 2 meals (there is only 2 of us).
You can change the filling to stilton and broccoli, sausage and tomato or anything else you have in the fridge.

Thanks for these recipes, the quiche sounds lovely and that is what I am looking to make. 9p pasta at Mr T's and Mr A's, wow I did not realise it is that cheap atm.

A cheap and tasty favourite of mine and DP is chick pea curry. For two I use a tin of chick peas (37p in Asda), an onion, a clove of garlic, curry powder and cumin, a squirt of tomato puree. (if i have any tomatoes that need using I also add those in but they are only optional).
I soften the onions in a pan with a bit of oil then add everything else and cook for about 15 minutes. I also add a little boiling water depending on whether I want a more dry or 'saucy' curry. I'm not sure how much it'd cost for 4 but I don't think it'd be a lot. I usually serve this with a smartprice naan to share (43p for a pack of 2). It really is a tasty and filling meal. HTH :)

Trying to live a good life on little money :T
