Out of curiosity....is there a particular reason why you or OH are (seemingly) unwilling to rent for a bit to familiarize yourself with the area first?
Buying is such a HUGE commitment. Combining this with the currently unsure housing market....would you not entertain the idea of short term renting?0 -

I don't really think renting would be an option although I do appreciate the advantages..........unfortunately the logistics of transporting all our stuff (we have a seriously huge amount, having already downsized from a large 6 bed house last move we still have more furniture than most people we know
), plus the cost of storing it all (parents have said they could accommodate some in their garage/conservatory, but this would only amount to a third at most) as well as two sets of removals and then we have three cats - two of whom are house cats. It's a shame but I doubt we could find a rental property that would be suitable to be honest
