The best beaches are around the melliah area, to be quite honest malta is not very child friendly. I would suggest the spanish islands are much more accomodating.

Just back from Malta last week. We stayed in Sliema at the Victoria Hotel. Beautiful hotel with good food and on a quiet road - unfortunately, that quiet road is at the top of a steep hill. Not many sandy beaches for children in Malta, the best is on the north of the island, it's easy to get around on the (cheap) buses, but most of Malta (especially Valletta) is very hilly. The people are lovely though, very friendly and helpful - and they love children. Maybe try St. Julians? There is a small bay there for the children and lots of cafes/restaurants. Not too far from the airport either if you want to get cheap flights and taxi transfers.
    Hope this helps.
    Normal people worry me.
  • We too recently stayed in the hotel attached to Victoria (the Palace).

It was a lovely hotel with a roof top infinity pool, and the food was ok, but that had to be the highlight of our trip to Malta.

If I am honest, it is probably one of the places I have liked the least in all my travelling history.

The locals (I generalise) don't respect the place (seeing them drop the litter in the sea than find a bin), the local authorities don't spend a penny on pavements (worst I have seen anywhere!) the buses and taxis you take your life in your hands and if you are looking for culture, unless you are interested in a church, don't bother searching, we went on three days of culture searching, and realised the best way to have a nice holiday was to sit on the roof terrace of the hotel. All the restaurants we went to, either didn't serve the food to us (incompetent, or it was inedible!)

If you insist you want to visit this country, I would suggest a boat ride as the architecture looks nicer from a distance.

I understand Gozo might be more of a relaxing beach destination, and be more pleasing to the eye. Sadly we gave up trying to find anything better after the 3 days of search so never got that far.

Took a hop on hop off bus ride round the island, and to be honest I wasn't overly impressed by St Julians either. Slightly more resorty maybe.

Malta is very small, so don't think it would take long to get to the port too get across to Gozo if you are brave enough.

Personally I would say go for a different country though!

Such a different experience to ours, and we got back on Friday. We loved Malta. Valletta is full of culture, and there are Roman remains all over the Island, beautiful churches, friendly people and fabulous seafood. We ate at some lovely restaurants with great food and good service.

There are areas which are football shirt city, but they are easy to avoid.

We travelled both by bus and by hire car, both were easy and pleasant, the driving standards are not as bad as we were lead to believe, if one drives assertively it is fine.

We stayed in Marshallokk in the very south of the island, at a rustic, but very friendly guesthouse, right on the harbour. The hospitality was incredible and the locals so friendly and helpful. It was very family friendly, and close to all the amenities.

We normally do 4/5 star hotels, but this was just a quick week away and we wanted to chill in a real maltese area, which is just what happened.

Beaches are not great in Malta, but there are a couple of small sandy coves close by which are almost deserted in the week, and very family friendly.

I went to Malta once. Thankfully i only paid about £100 for a week as I got the holiday cut price on a holiday auction site.

Stayed at the Qwara Palace in Bugibba which was fine as long as you get a balcony/view to the front.

Beaches..not really many on Malta and nothing special

    Eating out-pretty poor pickings

Time share touts-plent of 'em...southern cocky charmers some with a bad attitude who clearly require a bat in the mouth

Litter-plenty of it. The Maltese seem to think its ok to abandon your old washing machine or pile of builders rubble by the roadside. That might be why many Brits like the place as they feel at home.

Maltese-generally fine though many are much happier and friendlier if you are pushing money into their hands.

All in all,not a bad one off trip and thankfully i got it cheap. Plenty of history to view. I wont return.

Malta is on my list of least favourite places right behind Cyprus.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Cyprus is my least favourite destination too, and we were worried malta would be similar.

Maybe it was because we stayed outside of the traditional British tourist area (Qwara/Bugibba/St Pauls were not our scene at all) We saw no time share touts.

I went to Gozo it was more boring than Malta itself, I agree with alot of the other posts it was the worst place i have ever been to, they say you either love or hate Malta needless to say I belong to the latter .Honestly there are much better places to take children to they are hard enough to keep occupied at the best of times.
