We were burgled at our previous house. We were warned by the police not to put anything dangerous on top of the back wall of our property (spikes, etc). We attached trellis and planted climber roses next to the wall. They will grow quickly and provide adequate deterent.

Also remember to remove objects your side of the fence/wall which burglars could jump onto (bbq's, bins, etc). It's much easier to climb over when there's something the other side to break your fall!

While I agree with the principle if they manage to still break in this could make a horrible mess in your house!

    Fixied.......

I can't believe that some one cab sue you if they get injured whilst breaking in to your property, but I bet no one has sued a burglar for the damage and distress caused when they have entered your property.

I agree wholeheartedly with the previous posts - you *ought* to be allowed to run razor wire etc. over the top, but in today's crazy world you can't.

The trellis / thorny shrub is the most practical solution. I did a similar thing for free at my last house - went and collected seeds from gorse bushes growing on the heathland nearby. Within a year I'd got an impenetrable gorse hedge. Only trouble was, it was a bu**er to keep under control, gorse really is vicious ! But it did the trick in my case, which was to keep the neighbour's dog off our garden.

Also worth considering is laying a gravel path - the idea being that walking on it creates noise, which a burglar will want to avoid.

A friend of mine used the "grease mixed with odds and ends of gloss paint" trick quite successfully. It's damn near impossible to get off clothing, but it's more effective at deterring nuisance kids rather than a determined burglar.
