Creating an ensuite bathroom from integral garage

We are looking at having the bungalow extended to the side this would house a new kitchen come family room, the old kitchen would be split into two = half to my craft room and half to daughters bedroom. We had wanted to use it for a bathroom but instead have decided as we have a double garage at the front - we could borrow a quarter and knock through from our bedroom - our architect chap has drawn it up and the size we have is 6 ft 4 by 5 ft 7 - would this be an ok size for en suite shower room??? Could stand to have a pokey shower where you felt enclosed - to be honest a wet room would be lovely but am told its more expensive to do in an existing dwelling so a shower room is ok. Not sure what the conversion would work with concrete garage floor - would it need to change the foundation???

Thanks for your help peeps - its appreciated

Actually - have just thought of something else I needed to ask - the kitchen family room is going to be 12 ft 1 1/2 in wide by 21 ft long and we were looking at the folding external doors - anyone any experience with them and also what would be the best size 8 ft or 10ft - thank you so much - my Dad was a builder but he passed 2 years ago - I so miss having him here to run things by!

If you extend into the garage make sure it is well insulated. The people who owned my house before me put a shower room/toilet in the integral garage, but it is FREEZING in winter and the heating can't cope, so in the depths of winter it is just a cupboard (although it is great for keeping food/booze cold at christmas!)

thanks hun - it would be done bya builder - we wouldnt be doing it outselves - we dont have an ensuite and worried if it will be big enough but we still want to leave enough space in the other half of the garage to park a car so we darent make it any larger. I dont know if the floor will have to come up and the foundations be redone or what they will do - no experience of it - there is already plumbing in the garage and believe it or not a working radiator - the lady who lived here before us - had her washing machine plumbed in and it was like her utility.

Am also still looking for advice re bifold doors - if the internal measurement is 12 ft 1 what width doors are best to go for - 8 ft or 10 ft - obviously you will need a little space either side so if we went for the 10 foot that would leave just 1 foot either side - so wondering if this would not be enough - would 8 be better but just dont know - wish they did a phone line to upstairs - I would be having quite a few conversations with my Dad just about now - lol - thanks peeps

So you'd end up with a one car garage, consider how this would affect the value of your home and if you'd be bothered about this.

What foul drainage would you have to do?

Is there much difference in floor levels?

In answer to your original question, the measurements you give should be adequete space for an en suite shower room. My en suite is much smaller than that and we manage with it (having recently had it refurbished), and that is with the added burden of having a door that opens inwards into it

Note: our shower cubicle is the smallest model possible and probably wouldn't be suitable for a larger person or if you were using it all the time- it is more a back up for when we have guests. Your measurements are much more generous though so you should be able to get a bigger cubicle!

The way we are looking at it is - most people dont use their garages now anyway - you could still use one side of it plus half of the other side it jsut wouldnt go all the way back as the shower room would be there - I figure most folk would want an en suite rather than a double garage and if they did they could always change it back....that in hand with I doubt we will ever move from here anyway

We dont think there will be too much of an issue with the drainage as there is already a sink and radiator etc etc in there - the lady who lived here previously used it as a utlility room

Think that floor level is pretty much the same!

Thank you - it helps to chat over things

Our bathroom door would open inwards too. We would want to use it on a daily basis and am really hoping I can get a roomy shower cubicle - I get claustrophic in small ones but that is just me - dont like enclosed spaces at all - Thank you you have made me feel better - we just have tow ait for the final quotes to come back from the builder now
