Brakes went on dual carriageway

When was it last MOTd? You'd expect signs of such hose cracking and brake pipe corrosion to have been picked up then.
My wife had a car once where a brake flexi hose passed visual inspection and blew out on the rolling road brake test.
I trust that garage implicitly and take my car there because the MOT testers are competent and test to the letter. They phoned up being quite apologetic about it. I simply said I was glad it happened on the rolling road and not when my wife would have needed the brakes to work that hard.
And a MOT is 12 monthly. A lot can happen in that time.0 -

I know its slightly off topic but why did you brake when overtaking?
Turns out it was a seized caliper. We also needed new discs and pads. No mention of any pipe problems. Over £300 worth in total. Didn't have a lot of choice given the situation.
There was a car ahead of me that started braking so I had no choice but to brake too in order to maintain the gap between us.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Bit odd you lost all your breaks. In modern car a fluid leak on the rear circuit should still leave you with front breaks.0

OH still thinks he can hear a noise related to worn/wearing wheel bearings so the car is going back into our own local garage next week and it'll be thoroughly checked over at the same time just for peace of mind.
I don't pretend to understand the whys and wherefores, all I know is what happened and what we were told the problem was. :undecidedHerman - MP for all!0 -

if the caliper was dragging,it would heat the brakes up
this cooks the grease in the bearings and can kill the bearings0 -

I thought the brake systems were opposites ie front n/s and rear o/s and vice versa so you still get some stability if one goes down.Maybe its changed in newer cars?
Have had a similar thing myself where a hose got a hole in it and the brakes lost pressure, forcing me to stop on the handbrake.0 -

Shop around! Most people who are competent with a spanner could do those job themselves in maybe three hours from jacking the car up, to lowering it again. Would Hubby or one of his mates give it a go? If he's got a reasonable toolkit, he could probably get all the parts for £80-£100.
This happened when we were away from home. The car's been fixed so we could get back.Herman - MP for all!0 -

When I actually think about it I think we both be right and depends on the car.0
