I live in Monifieth. I noticed a Grossets near the Aldi actually so might try them. Thanks

Yeah, that's the one I meant. Scott Brothers in the Ferry is great too and they do some meat pack deals.
There is also a fruit and veg shop in the Ferry but it's not really cheap, so you are probably better with the farm shop.

Don't know which post you mean but my DH is like that. You need to add items to bulk it out and keep quiet. ;)

My DD doesn't really like fruit other than apples and if I give her the same thing too often she goes off it. So for her fruit/veg portion I often do carrot sticks with hummous or pepper strips with a homemade dip which is own brand soft cheese with a tsp of mayo and a tsp of yogurt stirred in to soften it and some chopped chives.

In the summer I will do salad boxes with quiche or some cold meat (leftover chicken from Sunday lunch) and plastic knife and fork. I mix up salad dressing and put a little bit in one of those individual jam pots that you get in cafes which I bring home afterwards. They leak a bit but if you put it in the lock'lock box with the salad leaves it doesn't go all over the lunchbag. Homemade potato salad always goes down well and homemade coleslaw helps to fill her up and also help with the fruit and veg intake. In winter she will sometimes take a flask with leek and potato soup (she's 15 so we don't have problems with the school not liking them to bring hot food). If we have chilli con carne she likes to take some reheated the next morning and put in a wide necked flask. My Chilli is more veg than meat!!

In general veg is cheaper than fruit and is slower release carbohydrate.

For the sweet treat I do a chocolate traybake with icing on the top, cut it into 24 pieces and freeze it. (Funny, she doesn't mind having the same thing every day if it's chocolate!) The ingredients cost £1.50 for the cake plus about 75p for the icing and it does nearly half a term. You can get traybake containers in Lakeland so it keeps it from getting squashed in the freezer
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

maryb - Can you give me your recipe for chocolate traybake? Some years ago Asda used to do something similar, it had chocolate icing or buttercream on top and then covered in hundreds and thousands and came individually wrapped in squares so was ideal for lunchboxes. I'd love to try and replicate it.

    Spendless,
It's just a three egg sponge cake mix and replace some of the flour with cocoa
    So
    3 eggs
    6oz sugar
    6 oz soft marge
6 oz Self raising flour - then take out 2 tbsps and replace with 2 tbsps cocoa pwder
    level teasp of baking powder

mix well with an electric mixer until it goes a lighter colour then put it in your traybake tin which you have lined with a bit of baking parchment and level the top. My tin is just the right size that a sheet of baking parchment fits widthwise across the length so it's easy to cut to size for the bottom. I don't bother to line the sides as it's not that deep and you can just run a knife round the edge to loosen it when you turn it out. It takes about 25 minutes in the oven at 180degrees - same time as for an ordinary cake really as it's the same depth just wider.

when it's cool I put it in the Lakeland traybake container and ice it in there then cut it into portions. I just use a chocolate buttercream icing. Quantities depend on your offspring's capacity for sugar consumption. Mine likes it pretty thick. The proportions are twice the weight of icing sugar to soft butter (has to be butter - marge tastes yuk) beat well until it looks like whipped yellow cream then add cocoa powder until it's the right colour
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Yeah, Robertsons is pretty expensive! To be honest I only occasionally buy from Scott Bros. too as I tend to go to the St Andrews Farmers Market at the beginning of the month and stock up on meat for the freezer. Then I check on mysupermarket for deals at Sainsbury's and Asda (and Sains is often the cheapest for the things we buy!) and get my basics there then go to Aldi and/or Lidl for some other bits inc. some fruit and veg depending on what I got at the market and what offers are on elsewhere.

I'm only feeding myself, DH and 3 yr old DS1 (DS2 is only 3 months) and I bf and use cloth nappies apart from one pack of disposables a month for night so no expenses there, but we do eat a lot of meat and as much organic as possible and don't really buy many budget lines and I spend around £75 per week (inc toiletries/cleaning stuff and a fair bit of wine ;) )...and up until recently it was only £50.
