Does HMRC owe me money!

Hi,

Hope someone can help,

My wife has had two different jobs within the last 5 years but always seems to be on BR tax code with the exception of 8 months in 09/10.

I'll give you the background of our case, each year will refer to tax year.

Job A: Full time salary £22, 000
Job B: Full time salary £22, 700

06/07:
Only had Job A. Tax Code BR.

07/08:
Job A & Job B, both part time. Tax Code BR for both.

** At the end of the above period my wife was given a rebate of just above £4,000 (i assume for being on the wrong code??) **

08/09
Job A & Job B, both part time. Tax Code BR for both.

09/10. Job A & Job B, both part time until January 2010. Job A Tax code 727L. Job B Tax Code BR.
- Job B only (Left Job A), January 10th 2010 until end of tax year. Full Time. Job B tax code BR.

10/11.
Job B, full time up until August 31st 2010, then left job to start family. Tax Code BR.

My wife left her job September 2010 so we could concentrate on starting a family.

We think we might be owed another rebate but we're not 100% sure, we dont want to go straight to HMRC in case we haven't been paying enough tax and we owe them money.

As now my wife is pregnant :D and it's only me that earns any money, we have a very (very) tight budget so couldn't afford to lose any.

Hope someone can offer some advice.

Thanks, Matt

in tax year 06/07 she should have been on tax code 503L so has paid too much tax (basically by 5035 x22% plus 2150 at 12% ) i.e. £1365

in tax year 07/08 if she was taxed at BR then she would have over paid tax by (5225 x 22% plus 2230x 12%) = 1417

so I have no idea why you were given a 4000 rebate (maybe it was for several years worth of over taxation)

08/09 if she was BR then she would have overpaid tax by 6035x20% = 1207

09/10 I would prefer the P60 and P45 info to establish the total gross income and the total tax

10/11 paid too much tax ... what was her P45 details

It's a bit difficult to be sure without having the actual P60/P45 figures for each year. However, it does seem probable that she is due some tax refunds (assuming that the combined earnings of her two part time jobs did not take over the threshold into the 40% band in any year).

If you were to post the figures from all the P60's and P45's for the various years then I or another regular poster here would be able to give you a better idea.
If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me! :)
