Hello
I would like to know if anyone has experienced the same thing. I have recently got my egg card balance to zero and I have been asking egg to close my account for some months; last month a 50p “minimum finance charge” appeared on my account… I thought this was a bit off but paid it anyway. This month I have been charge £36.99 for “protection”. This is totally out of the blue, I actually reclaimed about £1200 off of egg for mis-sold PPI last year. My recent charges look a bit odd, like they’ve decided to charge me then take it away and then charge me again:
22 Mar 2011
ADJUSTMENT TC 256
£-36.99
20 Mar 2011
CARD PROTECTION 08448 482908
£36.99
04 Apr 2011
PAYMENT 2 EGG .
£-0.50
04 Apr 2011
CORRECTION TO ACCOUNTS
£36.99
I have emailed egg to ask that because I haven’t asked for this they should remove it and that I want my account closed and this was the response:
Dear xxxxxxxx
The Card Protection hat's been applied to your account is an insurance product which is operated by Card Protection Plan.
The policy covers all your cards not just those from Egg. If you lose one or all of your cards one simple call will cancel them and order replacements.
To find out more copy the following link into your web address bar:

Alternatively call our dedicated team on 0844 848 4266.
You will need to contact them directly if you no longer want this cover.
Thanks for your message.

Does anyone have some advice for what I should do? I feel like getting straight onto the financial ombudsman!
Thanks for your help

CPP is nothing to do with any individual card provider - it's a stand-alone product - and it's not PPI.
If you've bought it at some point, you'll have a CPA (continual payment authority) on your account (this is with CPP not Egg) so you need to phone CPP and cancel with them - there's nothing Egg can do to cancel this for you (I used to work for Capital One and we had no end of people face the same issues but with Sky).
Phone CPP - get a refund - then close your Egg Card.

If it has never appeared in past years on your Egg card it may be because you have previously used another card to pay CPP which you have since closed. CPP's T&Cs will state that they have the right to take payment from any of your cards if they can not take payment from the original one.Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Thanks for replies guys, very helpful.
I have today contacted CPP asking that this policy is cancelled and that they provide me with a copy of the credit agreement because I believe this policy was mis-sold to me when I took out the card.0
