Diverted BA Flight caused missed connection

At Christmas we were flying to Bangalore with BA and had a pre-booked connecting flight that evening on to Cochin. The BA flight had to be diverted one hour out of Bangalore due to fog and we landed at Chennai.

We had to buy a flight from Chennai to Cochin and incurred all kinds of expenses for hotels, lost flight from Bangalore etc, but our travel insurance it seems doesn't cover it. It only covers a missed flight out of, or returning to, the UK. We subsequently looked into other travel insurance companies but they all have the same rules.

BA say their only responsibility was to get us to Bangalore, which they would have done the next day, but we would still have to get a flight from there to Cochin so decided to go direct from Chennai.

So it seems we can't get compensation from anyone, is this right??
