I thought this forum was meant to be helpful!
If I am interested in changing my car for something with better MPG. I currently have a Nissan Note but after the inital couple of years ( car is now 4) it starts to depreciate heavily in value and also more things start to go wrong with the car.
Moving to a group one insurance car will save money, as will not shelling out £130 + for tax. If i bought a group one insurance car that would save approx £100 per year over 5 years = £500 plus i will also save £130 x 5 = £650 and also will not have to have maintenance and repair costs and will have a health trade in value in 5 years time than holding on to my car as it is.
I also will be putting less petrol/diesel thru my car on a weekly bases. We also own a nissan Qashqai so we do not mind a 2 seater car. But with the note doing 39 mpg and having the potential of doubling this I assumed this would approx half my petrol bill.
ANyone who wants to help and give advice on what cars would be economical if i change please send a reply.Mortgage - 05/03/10
£ 110,743.90 Aim to reduce mortgage to 105k by end of 2010

£5093.15 Aim to pay off car loan by end of 2010 :j0 -
Some are being a bit harsh here I think - the Note is not necessarily an economical car in 1.6 petrol form (or even 1.4 ) for starters.
A 40 mile a day commute would see savings if dropping to a tiny Aygo or similar size car for sure. Sacrifice would certainly be comfort
I wouldn't say you do enough miles to pay a premium of any sort for a diesel model but something like the Note 1.5diesel at the right price may fit the bill with 60 + mpg potentially
Do a search on Parkers website for various smaller cars for all the manufacturers facts and figures. Don;t forget just because a piece of paper says it will do 60mpg, doesn't mean it will in real life of on your particular journey
Also the main depreciation of a car is in its early years not its later years0 -

From what OP says cost of purchase is not the issue and all savings need to be concentrated in running costs and since they like Nissans then the Leaf is the one to buy. 109 miles @ £1.3 (source Nissan)0

Hyundai i10, cheap to buy cheap to run, the new model 1.2 is only £20 a year to tax.(older model is £35), 5 year warranty, 4 people in comfort and lots of toys on the style including heated seats.
they now do a blue model which is free to tax and does loads of miles
