Here's the NI site, though I expect it's broadly similar/mainly identical.

Surely you have been colluding in fraud - you are not permitted to do work that you would expect to be paid for - if these same colleagues are claiming they would have paid you if you were self-employed then they are crooks through-and-through.0

OP states he's doing voluntary work...
Check with your personal adviser at JCP of any incentives to go into self employment, in the previous tax year there was a self employed credit paying £50pw for the first 16 weeks, you can still claim HB/CTB depending on your income.
Be aware that you state you would be working at least 30 hours but earning under £2,000 pa. WTC criteria is paid work or expect to be paid for work undertaken.
Check with the chamber of commerce or similar in NI as there may be start up grants and advice with business plans etc.
As you meet the criteria for the run on/job grant these should be automatic, just check with landlord/bank account.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -

I should also make clear, I haven't been volunteering anywhere near 30+ hours up till now, and Jobs & Benefits are ok with it because it doesn't affect my dedicated job search hours
Found this on the NI Gov website - Working Tax Credit can be backdated for up to 3 months, which, if my local authority also agree to an extended payment of housing benefit (I'll write to them today) should help close the donut hole if I'm accepted:
(noob user - I'm not permitted to post a link, but google "backdate wtc" for the HMRC page)0
