You taught yourself how to play a musical instrument, and you don't think that's clever?

It's very clever. Just because a talent or skill isn't strictly academic or "average joe", doesn't mean that it isn't clever.

If you have a talent or skill for entertainment, there is no reason why you shouldn't try to earn some money from it, especially if it's something you enjoy.

Also don't worry about getting confused by aresol cans or whatnots... I had a physics teacher once, who knew his subject inside out, yet could barley even tie up his own shoe laces...he still got along ok.

Just don't resort to drugs, unless they have been prescribed to you after a very careful assessment by a Doctor.

I think I might have worked out why I struggle with certain words/sentences after all these years!
I think it might be to do with having quite a bad overbite. I also have a fairly small mouth. I think these things combined could be my problem!
I know it's slightly taking the thread a different direction, but after years of confusion and frustration im quite excited to possibly have an answer!
    As you were....

Firstly, I would really encourage you to go to your GP. There is now a national service where people like you can access first-step psychological therapies like anxiety management, usually based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). I would strongly encourage you to ask if you can access it and get the help you deserve. Your GP could also prescribe you some beta-blockers to take when you are going to a job interview, although I would encourage you not to see these as a permanent solution. Get the psychological help too. I'd also recommend that you look at a website called No More Panic (http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/) which has lots of great resources for managing anxiety.

Have you also thought about doing some voluntary work to regain your confidence and build your skills? That way, you can try a range of things and restore your faith in yourself.

Good luck. You can do it!

I totally agree with this post. The national service is IAPT (Improved Access to Psychological Therapies) http://www.iapt.nhs.uk/ and their main focus is working with people with anxiety and/or depression with the aim of encouraging more people back in to work. I would really recommend that you go and see your GP and ask for a referral. You can also self-refer in some areas but you'd have to google your primary care trust to see if this is available to you. I know it is a fairly daunting step to go to the GP and ask for help, but it will be worth it! Many IAPT services also employ employment advisors who can help you look for work, do interview practice etc.

    Good luck :)

I think it's just luck. There's not a particular 'job' as such.
I got speaking to a 'friend of a friend' last night, and he works as a printer, and he spends about 7 hours of his 8 hour shift playing football in the warehouse, looking at !!!!!! online, facebooking etc ect. There's no internet policies or anything.
The main boss (as opposed to the manager who doesn't mind this behaviour) is never ever there...maybe a few time per year.

I assume that is exactly the type of job you want?
They're out there, but I think you just need to get really luck to stumble across one.
  • Loads of ideas for jobs already...I just want to add my voice to those advising you to go to your GP, not for drugs, but CBT. I think it can be really beneficial for treating anxiety. It may not be a cure, BUT it can actually raise your awareness of your patterns of thinking and, over time, change those patterns.

The other thing I'd like to say is that you ARE clearly a very intelligent, creative person and I think creativity isn't generally valued. Raising your self esteem may help you, over time, develop a creative line of work. I actually feel quite excited for you! Find one of these jobs you're after, but work on developing your confidence and creativity and you never where you may be in a few year's time!

Been over a year since I began this thread.
Where the hell does the time go!!

Not a great deal to update with.
I DID manage to get a job, shortly after beginning the thread which was the main 'goal' I guess. I've been there for over a year (warehouse work).

I know that it's a good thing and i'm in a better position than I was due to having something recent on my CV again now and I have a little savings, but I still haven't actually 'moved on' in life.

I don't like this job at all, but i've resisted the urge to quit, every single Monday morning for the last year (which I'm quite proud of, having seen lots and lots of staff members doing the same job as me unable to handle it and go on benefits instead) !!

A few issues/changes at work recently make me think that I won't be able to hold out much longer though, so, once again, I'm forced to think about the future.

I still haven't a clue what I want to do with my life 'work-wise'. It's becoming clear that I never will and i'm not getting any younger.

Do you think it's best to just jump into 'anything'. Any kind of course that could potentially lead to a career within a few years? Even if I have no interest in it.
I'm gonna send off for a local college prospectus today.

Actually you might come across quite well at an interview for many jobs. If you are considering labouring and cleaning and general manual jobs, employers want people who are modest and do not come across as just wanting a the job until they can get another job that they think is better.

Interviews are not always interogations and employers are not always looking for fancy answers. I would not rule out just asking around local shops (not the big supermarkets) and building sites etc. A modest guy who looks fit and strong and lives locally could be just what many employers want. you might be lucky and hired on the spot or given some pointers as to where you might get work.

What about going to your local college to do some creative courses, and working for a few hours in a charity shop? Interacting with the public might help with your confidence. There are also courses you can do in speaking, I do private tuition with people to build up confidence and find the hidden skills - of which it sounds like you have a lot. Honestly I think you would be wasted chopping up wood, I think asking local college about stuff then asking tutors for advice would be a good way to go.

And yes to the poster who said some people on here have trouble expressing themselves, I have to re-read so many posts to work out what people are saying, all it needs usually is some punctuation! So you write well, another skill to add.
