When american receipes refer to cups, i.e. cup of flour, cup of brocolli or cup of liquid, what are these equivilent to in ozs.or grams.

As Thrift Lady says it's a volumetric measurements equivalent to 8fl. oz. But a reasonable weight aproximation is 8oz/225g for sugar, butter, eggs, oil, milk or water and 4oz/110g for flour or breadcrumbs (and I would think probably icing sugar too).

Seriously, thanks for such a comprehensive answer Holsale and I'm glad to know I'm not giving out duff information. :T

We had grits in Florida last year. It tasted like a hot bowl of grease yuck didn't like.

HOLsale- DH likes rice-a-roni and we stock up when we visit relatives in Canada. I've never found it on sale here, any ideas how to create my own:confused:

    go to www.hillbillyhousewife.com
there are a lot of recipes on there and rice a roni is one of them, what I really like is you can make up several batches in one go, I got some ziplock bags from £land and made up quite a few of the rice recipes, the yellow rice is good. It came in quite handy as a couple of times we would have only had time to grab a takeaway i got my little bag of rice out and some lamb chops and had a good meal very quickly!
I did add my own little touches to the ingredients, I had some italian herbs instead of just parsley so i used them and I also veried the 'flavours' of the stock cubes, so i got lamb rice a roni to go with the chops!
  • PS I loved them grits in florida!!
My god thriftlady - no wonder you married him if the cucumber puts you in mind of hubby!!!!!!

Hi HOLsale, can you tell me what biscuits are, I was reading a book and they went to McDonalds and had fries, burgers and biscuits - what are they?
GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£400
  • They are lovely! Like little savoury scones that you have with a KFC or chicken and biscuits! You can get a recipe for the KFC one on www.topsecret.com but i didn't really like them and they seemed a lot of faffing about, several US sites have them. Over to HOLsale for the proper translation!!!!!
  • actually its www.topsecretrecipes.com = sorry

bread and butter pickles are quite nice
I like them too. It's another thing we fetch back.I've seen something that looks similar but never bought them in the deli section of Ikea.

Another favourite of mine is catalina dressing. Again I've never seen it here, so I fetch it back and it's ok if it stops in my fridge a long time cos canadians don't date stamp a lot of their goods yet
