CITI financial debt recovery!!???

Good morning,
This is my first post so please forgive me if this is in the wrong area!! Could anyone help/ offer some advice on the following?
I received a letter yesterday from CITI financial stating that my account had been sold to Cabot finance for the assignment of a debt due on the account which also had a letter from Cabot finance detailing the account number and amount owed (£230.65).
I had this account back in 2004 and to my knowledge paid this account off in full (via balance transfer) in 2005/6 and afterwhich I closed the account. The problem is looking back through my paperwork I have no record of my CITI financial account due to the age of it and also due to it being closed.
During the last 6-7 years I have received no correspondance from CITI requesting payment for any fees due or statements, etc so I'm assuming this is an error on their account.
I contacted Cabot yesterday and they weren't very helpful to say the least as in their mind its guilty until proven innocent!! Can anyone suggest how I go about proving this money isn't owed as £230 is alot of money to pay for something I don't believe I owe.
I am going to contact the card I believe I transfered the money to and also request statements from CITI including dates as to when the account was closed and the money owed on the account but, would be grateful if you could offer some further suggestions.
Any advice would be gratefully received,
Kind regards,
Jason.

Not to worry I phoned Cabot this morning and requested they provide evidence of monies owed, amounts etc. The operator informed me she couldn't obtain that information so I requested that I receive the last three months statements prior to the account being defaulted in order for me to carry out my investigations.
When they said they couldn't provide this they suggested they close the matter and are sending out a letter to confirm this.
