I was so glad to see the family getting housed in the end, it was a very distressing programme and makes you wonder just how lucky you really are.
One astounding fact brought up in the programme was the fact that there are something like 640,000 houses lying empty, with so many people homeless that is outrageous and needs sorting quickly.0 -
Well frankly, after watching that program I am so angry. This is happening in the 4th largest economy in the world! The loverly daughter from Minehead I would be proud if I was her father. Most of the kids in my extended family are spoilt brats!{Um not my lad however}lol.
I am so shocked and angered. However the great Mother of a criminal son has much to answer.I can remember in the early 80`s when my late father in law asked if I would like to buy his very nice council house in a good area for £12k.No I said, this is wrong, they are here for people who need to pay a decet rent.
Those poor souls on the program were renting in the West country{where I live} for £600 a month.Believe me,wages here are some of the worst in the UK.
Nuuuu Labour,my !!!,just another corrupt bunch of cowboys that happen to be in power. However,I expect those snobby cows on the phone are doing from the council are doing rather nicely, didn`t hear much compassion in their voices.
Someone posted a thread about 3 silly cows getting well into debt.It was in The Mail, sorry but having just watched the prog I have little sympathy for them.
This country is in the middle of those that have, those that have nothing and those that borrow to much to become one of the former.0 -
I know it's TV and you maybe don't see the full picture, but Ms Minehead should be VERY proud of her father as well.
And possibly even well done to the TV co - didn't go for the "well these lot are wasters anyway" famillies. I half-expected this at the start with the "contains strong language" warning at the start, but one 2 second outburst... I was surprised at the lack of "strong language" unlike the wannabee to$$ers on most "reality" shows.
As you say Pobby - not good PR for the featured council workers (I know they're not all that bad, but too many are) and our "if you ain't got a house tough sh*t" NuLab (?? NuCon more like) wasters.0 -
anybody that has been waiting for two years or more for a house should be GIVEN a house.i know thatcher hasnt been in power for at least 5 minutes but im sure its all her fault.my parents (so called socialists) bought their council house for a rediculously low sum(even though they paid rent on it for 30 years beforehand) so i have therefore stated that if i receive anything from their will, it will automatically be given to the most deserving homeless/benefit receiving/layabout chav/scumbag to make up for the fact that they have been massively deprived.myself, i will go and boil my head in utter despair, at how this once great country ,has descended into a free for all for anybody that has contributed nothing but expects everything. dont worry ,the ever dwindling so called middle class (who use to be called working class but now just happen to have a job) will pay.happy xmas.-....-.---.---. ..... .- -.-.

You must be joking right?
We waited 18 years to get a 2 bedroom flat from our Council.
My mum and dad, both retired, have waited 35 years, was offered a 2 bedroom flat, then told they couldn't have it cos they were only entitled to a 1 bedroom place - council won't listen that they both have physical problems and need to sleep in different rooms - now they only get offered sheltered housing.
Our uncle on the other side of the family, who is kipping on his sisters (council) sofa, homeless and pennyless, has been told the waiting time for a 1 bedroom flat around here is 54 years if you do things the correct way.
Don't get me wrong, one of my best friends is asian so I' far from racist, but I think there is something very seriously wrong when someone can come to this country with no money in their pocket, claim a few things about their homeland nobody can disprove and get's a house and benefits almost instantly, and then a woman and her family, who's rent payments has been !!!!!! up by the council, get's kicked out her house and left up !!!! alley without a bean to her name and a pennyless man who's worked all his life is told he'll die 30 years before getting a council flat the legit way.
I didn't follow the program properly, just glancing up from typing my begging letters to MBNA lol, but I got the gist of what was going on and it, to be frank, really got my goat up, so this short rant isn't aimed at you scooter100BSC Member 44 - not bankrupt yet, but getting there...0 -

Someones feeling a bit bitter.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
I was shocked at the family who's benefits were messed up and then they were evicted from their council house, being told they were made intentionally homeless, all because they hadnt communicated with all the departments of the council - what a joke!
I too was expecting some "chav" families, but they were truely decent people, trying to give a good life to their kids, being let down by very people that are meant to be supporting them.
How a council worker can sit on the phone and say "oh we won't be providing you accomodation tonight", I just couldn't do it - I would constantly have a house full of these families.
As you can probably tell this makes me very angry!!!
We need to build a lot more houses, at reasonable costs as a matter of urgency, to allow these families and kids the stability they need to become well rounded people.

Yes, I agree, it was utterly disgusting to watch last night, and as a mother of four, my heart went out not only to the parents but the children who were living that nightmare.
It was amazing to see the childrens resilence to their circumstance and the joy on there faces when they did have a home again.
Like you I don't know how some of these council workers sleep at night knowing that they have children out in the cold, when they have the power to place them in temporary accomodation.
I did find it interesting how none of the families portrayed in the show were from Ethnic minorities. Is there some racial discrimination going on here?
I also thought the young girl who befriend the young family of four was very caring and naive, did not the penny drop that the only reason that her family was there was due to her? Wonder what happened was she turned 16?
My heart just sank, watching her clevering warm her tin of beans on the radiator all day just so she could eat some hot food. What is wrong with people in Britain? They will give millions of pounds to other people suffering around the world, yet do little to help those at home?

I didn't see all the programme but find it very hard to believe that council workers put children on the streets out of spite.
I saw the end bits where 2 of the families went into private rented places with the help of housing benefit and crisis loans for furniture. Was it explained why they didn't do this as soon as they were homeless instead of going into those depressing B&Bs?0 -
A friend of mine, who as it happened did work indirectly for a council in Wales where I used to live, once said to me that, at least in his view, there was one single change that needed making to fix a lot of these problems.
Landlords demand rent up front. Deposit.
Housing Benefit is paid only in arrears.
Thats it. That single fact causes more problems than you would ever imagine. That and many landlords refusing to take "DSS" clients in the private sector. Despite the fact these days they are paid directly, so there is virtually no risk of them losing much if any money at all!0
