Best bank for basic account w/ poor credit rating

Which is the best to go for? I've only ever been defaulted a few times and I have a repossession on my record, but no CCJs. Am I likely to be rejected by most places for a basic account with Visa debit card (not Electron, as barely anywhere online accepts them)?

  • Basic accounts usually come with basic facilites - hence the visa electron

I buy a lot of stuff online, and hardly anywhere accepts Electron. I need an account with a Visa Connect. Any account with this card will do.

For accounts with a Visa debit card have a look at the Co-op and Nationwide. They might offer something.

You could also consider Yorkshire bank - ReadyCash Account as they offer a full blown Maestro/Switch Debit Card.

Or alternatively Natwest - Step Account, although you only get a Solo card with this account.

If you have had defaults you can not expect a proper debit card except Yorkshire banks Maestro card. tough but if you cant manage your finanaces then a bank isnt going to trust you as you would be to high a risk. Might sound harsh but its the truth and it goes for anyone else in your position.

You wouldnt employ a thief in a bank would you?
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.

Try for the HSBC current account by applying online - you may be pleasantly surprised.
  • Citibank have just accepted me for a full current account with Visa Debit card and cheque and I have a really, really bad credit history. Good luck!

Why the !!!! do banks refuse bad credit people debit cards?
I have been a defaulter in the past but have ran my Nationwide basic account flawlessly for a whole year and still they won't give me one!
I mean, you can't get anything on credit with it, you still have to have the money in your bank to use it, so give me a good reason why they refuse us!!!
Also, will me paying in a cheque next week for nearly £14,000 change their mind at all on this?!?
