Organic Veg Box - good value for OS-ers?

Options
Ok folks I've finally found an outfit that delivers Vegetable Boxes in my area after being extremely jealous of everyone who could get them!

Today I received:

1 x 4lb pumpkin
2lb carrots
1 1/2lb onions
3 1/2 lb beetroot
1 lb leeks
1/2 lb parsley - 1/2 flat half curled
1/2 lb kale
1lb broccoli
7 1/2 lb potatoes

for £13.50 delivered.

What do you guys think? Is it worthwhile continuing, needless to say nothing will be wasted!

Did you opt for purely veg btw? Mine usally has one or two items of fruit depending on what's seasonably available.

Yes you can order fruit boxes separately, however we're not great fruit eaters so we left that. Perhaps in the summer however it's vegetables and chocolate biscuits for the winter :rotfl:

  • Please could you tell me where I can find out delivers to me in my area. I live near Poole in Dorset.
    Many Thanks Natalie
  • Sorry to be the voice of dissent here
but it doesn't seem like good value to me...
It depends on if you are doing it because of the organic ethic thing, or if you are doing it to save money. I buy fruit & veg on the local market & although it isn't organic I think it is really get value - this week x2 pineapples for £1 plus having gotten known to the stallholders I tend to get a discount. Would you honestly have gone out & bought this?? Pumpkins were selling for 25p after Oct 31, just as a comparison to butternut squash. Best wish
  • I have been having an organic veg box delivered for about a year.

I use a small local company and I have the smallest size box because there is only me and I pay £7.00.

The contents vary each week depending on what is in season and last week I received

    4 large carrots
    3 parsnips
    5 onions
    A huge cabbage
    3 large leeks
    ¼ lb mushrooms
    ½ lb cherry tomatoes
    1 garlic

Natalie,I found my supplier via The Soil Association website. You enter your postcode and it will list companies in your area.

If you are looking at this in pure monetry value, it doesn't represent good value. I could almost certainly do this cheaper elsewhere. As an ethical choice its a wise investment. You are buying organic, you are supporting local producers. You are using foods that can be composted back into your garden soil, you are giving your children more nutrients and helping their development.

I love the simplicity of this system. It dispences with the waste and obsene profits of the supermarkets and encourages community. Having said all that, I don't order one of these boxes. I live with just my daughter, who often eats elsewhere and I get a good cooked lunch provided free at work. I tend to make one large pot of soup and a couple of cooked meals in the week. I spent less than £4 per week on vegetables.

    Hi mirakl,

Thanks for posting. As you know I'm looking for a box in the same area as you and what you got sounds fine but maybe a little bit expensive. As others have said it depends how important organically grown veg are to you. I suppose you pay for what you get and as organically grown veg places that deliver seem to be a bit thin on the ground here, we will probably have to pay a bit more.

I'm definitely going to see the other one this weekend, so I'll report back when I've been.
