what would you do - british gas muddle up
Options
Hi There,
Rented a property for a couple of years, when I moved in gas was supplied by british gas, so I set up an account and paid the bills - no problems. After a year or so, I had a letter from british gas, saying my account was being transferred to another supplier. As i'd not requested any change, I rang them up, at which point they said it had been transferred to their business arm. As I'd not requested the change, they then offered to transfer it back, 'ok' I said. Cue several letters promising to transfer on such and such a date, then further letters saying unable to transfer because my current supplier raised an objection.
So, admittedly taking an approach which was perhaps too passive, i waited for the next bill from my apparently new, objecting, supplier, intending to phone then when i knew who they were - however it never came.
14 Months down the line, it transpires that the meter serial numbers were mixed up, and my landlord, who lives nearby, was paying gas based on my meter serial number which he was recieving. At this point I had moved out of the property.
My landlord is now chasing me for the bills which he paid with my serial number on. I've given him a letter stating I was responsible for gas usage at the property between the dates and readings of my last bill and when i moved out, and my forwarding address.
In theory, he should presumably apply for the supplier to refund him - however to make life simple, should I just pay him?
What would you recommend?
