    Have you connected the non working drive as a slave drive to a working computer?

    I have connected it to a working computer via a USB docking station - no problem accessing the contents, so the data files I have on there have been copied across and are safe. So I know that the drive works to that extent.

    Check the windows HCL when buying a new card, many may be recognised automatically and will work fine even for the boot drive provided you set the bios to boot from an addin card.
