    Lots on ebay

£50 for the screen, say £50 for a local techy to fit, about 30 mins to an hours work (fairly straight forward job on these HP laptops), just double check exact model number as sometimes different screens may be used on same laptop (sony and dell common for this)

The problem is that the OP has a fault that is 99.9% of the time caused by misuse which isn't covered under SOGA but I agree - go after the retailer.

But it's up to the retailer to prove that. Doesn't matter that in 99.9% of cases it may be the consumers fault, as this may be the 0.1% that it isn't. Unfortunately we have the old, old story of the retailer trying to push their legal duty somewhere else.

Equally one could argue that 99.9% of faults are put down to consumer misuse because consumers are told they are responsible and do not argue their point when this is not the case

Both me and my dad had HP Pavillion laptops, he had his about 9 months and the screen went, a "crack" HP said, he eventually claimed on the house insurance and got a Sony Vaio sent out, a few months after this my laptop, the same model as my dads, the screen went, when obviously I'd been extra careful because of what happened to the afore mentioned, I couldn't even be bothered to go through the mill with HP again, so just ordered a new laptop, (not an HP this time) which to be fair I was extremely happy with the performance of the laptop just not the screen damaging so easily.

I have had a screen problem with HP G56 130SA used one night only to open next day and black mark at top about quarter way in from left (wife thought it was a small leaf at first glance) with a horizontal and vertical line running across screen but no damage to screen could be seen. Then screen got worse and was unusable flickering could not see what was on screen. Just heard back from Currys and their service centre saying cracked screen not covered by gaurentee and returning to store.

Waiting for it to reach store then will speak with manager if no joy will use sales of goods act as Burden of proof lies with them as under six months old and look for, repair, refund or replace.

We definately did not have an accident or damaged it in anyway, if I did I would go on home insurance or buy a new one.

Do these laptops / netbooks have a locking lid with a central mounted catch ? These ones tend to be opened using pressure in the top centre of the lid. Ones with no catch often get opened and closed by one corner which, combined with a stiff hinge, can put extreme pressure on the screen.

There is no central catch on this notebook. In the case of my notebook, it has only been opened from the middle and has only had occasional use in the 4 months I have had it.

Incidently, flextronics have since returned it unrepaired however it now has a very definite line crack inside the screen running down over half of the screen. The screen is also flickering badly and not responding to the mouse.

I have eventually managed to speak to someone from ISME who have tried to fob me off, saying they need to speak to HP before acting and HP are closed until Tuesday.
I intend to keep on at ISME at the Notebook is less that 6 months old and therefore still covered by the SOGA if it is deemed faulty.

The item was bought under their BNPL offer so I have yet to start paying for it.

    Thanks for the update.

If I were you I would just write a physical letter outlining the fault, the retailer's responsibilities under the SOGA, and what you want done - and leave no wiggle room. Keep a copy of the letter along with proof of posting from the post office.

They will be less willing to fob you off in writing.

Thank you, I intend to send them a recorded delivery letter along with the pictures I took of the screen before it was sent off and after.

This is the response from ISME:

    Thanks for your email.

I tried to contact you this afternoon to discuss the ongoing query that you have with PV95018 HP DV6 Black Cherry i5 15.6in Laptop.
We have received the pictures that you sent of the faulty screen however we do agree with HP that the fault has been caused by damage or misuse therefore a repair can not be offered under the warranty.

We acknowledge that under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 if any product we supply fails prematurely due to an inherent fault (manufacturing defect), we will provide you with an appropriate remedy e.g. repair, replacement or refund.
When a fault is reported with an electrical product we may give you a supplier helpline to contact. We have arrangements in place with these helpline providers for them to identify the cause of any fault (we do not have the necessary technical expertise to do this) and to offer you an appropriate remedy on our behalf. As the fault with the laptop has been confirmed by a HP engineer as customer misuse we are within our rights to refuse a repair, replacement or refund.

If you disputing the findings of the supplier helpline you are required to provide us with an independent engineers report, detailing the cause of the fault and an estimate of the cost of repair.

I was under the impression that under the terms of the SOGA for goods under 6 motnhs old the onus is on the retailer to prove the item was not faulty ast point of sale not on the customer to prove that it was!

An indepenent engineer's report at this point would not be hugely helpful since the notebook has returned more damaged than when it was sent to flextronics
