HELP...Serious problems with British Gas.

If you weren't there at that point then you should be able to just tell British Gas that and to take it out of your name. It's not like they can ask for proof as there is really no proof you can provide to show that you didn't live somewhere.
The even easier alternative is if your partners sister gives them a call and says that it was actually her who was living there at that point then there shouldn't be any problems at all, as they even have a new name to move the balance into.
I'd personally be rather worried about where the details came from. I've contacted British Gas to tell them that I didn't live there at the time & in theory they know when we moved out because I was named on an account with them for our current address almost a year prior to this one being set up. But it seems that it's not that simple. If it was as simple and they couldn't ask for proof, surely people would be setting up accounts in random names, running up debt & then ringing & saying they never lived there at that time to get their name wiped off?
She can't ring them and change it because the account is in my name which means she can't make any changes & because the account is in debt I can't close it.
I've contacted the complaints department & they seem to be on the case. He's trying to track down the recording of the phonecall when the account was set up in my name so we can hear it & discover what's been going on.
It's definitely the fact I'm listed as the account holder, following a phone call to set it up that is the most worrying thing. Like you say, I can't understand it being a british gas mess-up as I don't see how it could be!0
