Woofer has canker???

Evening all, woofer I think has canker, he is shaking his head all the time as if to get something out of his ear. Also he has a red "dry " patch in his ear with a dark blackish waxy discharge. My sisters dog had this and took betsy to the vet where they said canker and gave her some drops. Is there a home remedy that I can try before spending out at the vets (not that that would be a problem) Thanks for any advice in advance.:)
Paul Walker , in my dreams;)

We use good old fashoned Thornit powder, but a as ever a trip to the vet might be in order. There's nothing worse than an itchy ear is there, and they tend to make it worse by scratching. x

  • I'd have to say a trip to the vet's too - Mr B has terrible problems with his ears and it usually takes some "proper" drops to sort them out - we've had several labs who've ended up having an op to sort out their ears (they use buttons to sew it back up and it looks really funny but seems to work) so I'd always say it's better to get it sorted before it develops into something worse.

Once fixed, and to help with stopping wax building up, I use a really good ear cleaner called CleanAural which was recommended by the vet (but you can buy online for quite a bit cheaper).

Hope he's back to "normal" soon.

Thank you both, phone call to the vets at 8 tomorrow morning. :) Another big bone for him if he is good in there as he has a dislike of the vets room the big baby.;)

Thanks for the info about CleanAural, my Daughters dog suffers from time to time with his ears ( vet said he has very small ear canals) so Will try it as a cleaner and see how it goes.

She uses Otodex at the minute to clean his ears, but as in my earlier post I use Thornit powder.

Could also be ear mites - if you use something like Stronghold as a de-flea-er then that can control ear mites as well.

  • Awww, poor lad. Glad he's on the mend now.

Mr B HATES the liquid being in his ears so only resort to this if they're really bad. I give them a "wipe clean" every week to try to stop the build up (http://www.animalsheltering.org/resource_library/magazine_articles/may_jun_2001/how_to_clean_-dogs_ears.html - step 3 but with the CleanAural) and this seems to keep them in order most of the time.

I think he only tolerates it as he always gets a mini-Bonio when I've finished!

buy something like clean aural from online pet stores. it is a cleaner vets sell you and is available for £5 without prescription. use cotton wool with it and clean the dogs ears/ a good site to buy it is animalmedic.com or petmeds. google it. my vet charges £14.
  • Glad you got the lad sorted - just wanted to second the use of Thornit powder. Dust my lots ears (4 springers, so a lot of big dirty ears :)) every other week with this and it helps keep them clean. Is particularly good for ear mites. I use an old make-up brush and literally just dust around the outer ear area, and a dusting on the toes as well to stop re-infection.
