chopped tomatoes/ tomato passata

Options
I use chopped tomatoes a lot as a base for pasta sauces and curry. I usually pick the brand makes when on offer if not own brand (but find them a bit more watery). For a change because it was a lot cheaper (29p tesco) i tried a carton of tomato passata and im a convert. a lot more saucey than chunky not watery and very tastey! just thought id post incase anyone else finds chopped tomatoes pricey. maybe ive just been slow on the uptake.

I find passata best for sauces, and pizza bases. For curries, a tin of tomatoes usually suffices. IO tend to buy good quality tinned ones when they're on offer, as they are so much better.

Why not, they're recyclable unlike the cartons! Yes they're bigger, but that means more uses for it.

But heavier to carry home if your on public transport with several bags and several buses.

Am a chopped tomato fan here though, Sainsburys Basics are especially good for the price (33-ish pence per carton) easy to store and far more chunks with less skin then the Tesco value version.

The passatta in jars is a lot more expensive than the cartons.

I'm a recent convert to passata also. Asda SP are 25p for carton. Can't remember how much is in them, but it is more weight than a tin of toms. I tend to buy both tins of the plum tomatoes and passata. I don't buy the chopped toms anymore. For the sake of 2-3p, I prefer to chop them myself. Just takes about 30 seconds.
