Moving House - Any Advice?

Options
My girlfriend and I are moving out from my parents home and into our first home. We've never lived away from home and so, we haven't got the foggiest about electricity bills & gas bills.

Basically, when we move into the house, I'm aware we should make a note of the readings on the meters. Nonetheless, I'm just wondering whether it would be advisable to get a new supplier for electricity and gas? Who would people recommend? We're in the north west of England.

I've looked at the U-Switch website but it asks for your current costs and, as we don't have any, don't know what to do.

Thanks

Write down your meter readings, call the current provider. if you don't know who the provider is call Transco 08706081524 for gas and your local distributor's MPAS service for ele, probably United Utilities or possibly SP Power Systems depending on your postcode. Then once that's sorted go to a switching site that gives cashback, preferably not uswitch, if you don't know your usage most will ask questions to estimate it for you.

The current owners of the house should advise you on their current suppliers.... I believe it's part of the sellers pack they provide (with fixtures, fittings etc)

You could also ask the current owners approx how much they spend on gas or electricity. It will depend on what appliances you have that are gas, for example heating, hot water, cooking. Properties vary depending on whether you use far more gas than electricity (like my parents do) or hardly any gas (I have a friend who's only gas appliance in the entire of the house is one heater). That will make a difference on suppliers obviously.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
