Economic Cars (plus debate!)

Hi guys
Im selling my current cover (a rover) as it seems to be swallowing petrol for fun. Once I get rid of it, What do you guys recommend as the cheapest to run cars? I dont know much about cars to talk to me like im a fool! I dont know whether its better to get a like a 1.9 deisel or a 1.2 petrol. I quite like the little 1.2 Corsa's but know idea how ecomonic. I dont do ton's of driving, and very rarely (bar a 1 mile stretch to work) do I travel on dual carriageways or motorways. It's mainly to my girlfriends and around town.

DEBATE
Now, this has been the bone of contention between several of my friends for a long time. Does "coasting" save money? When I say coasting, I mean knocking your car out of gear and maybe even keeping your foot on the clutch!! Anyone clear this up? I hear also that it can effect your breaking?

Thanks all
I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.

  • In regards to new cars, the Citroen C1 and the Toyato Aygo (which my gf owns) are excellent for fuel consumption - she never seems to fill up her car and it goes for miles. This is what the channel four website said about it.

Factor in class-leading fuel consumption of 61.4mpg and a superb three-year, 60,000 mile warranty and you're looking at one of the least expensive to run new cars in the UK.

No idea on the coasting though
  • A little car like a 1.2 petrol would be better for you as insurance and cost of diesel would knock out the savings over a Diesel.
Also i don't recommended coasting, your not in control of the car so it is dangerous plus and extra wear and tear on the clutch, not a good idea.

Modern fuel injected cars will cut all fueling and spark if your foot is off the accelerator and the revs are sufficient, so coasting costs you more as you're using fuel to idle the engine (you might go faster though!)

What is your budget? I would buy a small petrol for the usage you describe. Cheaper to buy, and probably insure and tax (if we're not talking about nearly-new cars), than an equivalent diesel. You could do better than a Corsa but you could do worse too.

Is fuel econony all you are after?? What sort of budget do you have?? I have a seat arosa1.4tdi. I never get less than 60mpg and it is in the lowest tax bracket and insurance group4. The boot is tiny though. I do a mixture of town and dual carriageway/motorway driving. It is avw made car for very little money.

thanks guys!! I have about £1800 to buy with once I shift mine. A small engined petrol car sounds good to me, but which one is the next debate!! Im not very materialistic so looks arent too important to me

I drive a Kia Picanto and get around 65 miles to the gallon, Insurance is very cheap so is tax (pay£110 per year I think). It's not a 'cool' car but it suits me fine and the car was very cheap to buy brand new they are a lot cheaper second hand than a Corsa.
