Washable - cloth nappies - which are best?

Hello there :)

I am expecting a baby and would like to use re-useable cloth nappies rather than disposables. I was wondering which brand you folks used and recommended. I would like the modern, coloured nappies that close by velcro and not terries. I tried terry nappies with my first and found them to be rather leaky or by my son's ankles as soon as he started to mobilise. Also how many nappies would I need - ideally for at least newborn to 12 months. I also know nothing about the linings you put in them, so if you have any guidance on that, it would be great.

Thank you in advance

I'd use two parters on a newborn rather than a pocket.

Little lambs are fab (used them for first 6 months of ds's life exclusively and then off/on for the next 3 years)
The microfibre ones are great for fast drying and softness, bamboo ones are brilliant for heavy wetters, highly absorbant after 3/4 washes and only get more so as you go on. They do take a good couple of days to dry though. The plain terry ones are also a great staple to have in your stash, one day drying time.

I never really got on with the LL wraps, used Motherease Rikki or Airflow.

Have a look on https://www.clothnappytree.co.uk for their classified bit if you are interested in picking any up second hand.

    Other good pockets are:

Bumgenius. Fab, fab fab nappy. Nursery friendly, everyone friendly, apart from having to put an insert inside it, just like using a pampers.

Fuzzi Bunz... great again, but popper fastening rather that applix.

Weenotions. Gorgeously designed nappies, excellent resale nappy. Can work out hideously expensive if you develop an addiction. *blush*

Take a look at https://www.thenappygarden.co.uk. They do trial packs, offer loads of advice. Just one of the great network of work at home mums who used cloth and decided to become nappy advisers. (I'm not connected to them, but always recommend them as bought most of my stash from there)

Good luck.. a year on and I still half wish ds hadn't potty trained. LOL!

The most economical is the birth to potty nappy and not the sized nappies. This is our last baby but first at cloth so most economical was most important to us. I also wanted to consider our lifestyle and our lack of dryer. In the end, I opted for the Pop In Dream Dri. I have both V2 and V3. They are both the same but the V3 has a microfibre outer instead of a cottony type fabric. I like both of them. They come with an outer and 2 layers that all pop together. You can't tumble dry the outer shell but it comes out the wash practically dry. They dry super fast. I tried a V2 on my 2 year old and they didn't leak at all so I'm very impressed with them. Now they only come in pastel colours but there are blues and greens too. I've been told that they are coming out with some brights and prints around June time. Although I'm not really bothered by how they look as function far outweighs looks. Forgot, the V3 is much thinner than the V2.

Not all Bumgenius nappies get great reviews so read reviews first. Check with you local council to see if they have any cash back schemes, most do at least £30.

If you do find yourself using prefolds like your terries with your last baby, get a few Motherease wraps, they will keep the leaks in, they are a workhorse wrap.

I also have the TotsBots Flexitots and they are really nice but they take forever to dry and you have to have a wrap for them. I have heard lots of good things about their new version of the easyfit, you don't need an outer for it.

Also, keep tabs on the Real Nappy Week. I believe it's in May this year and you should find some deals. If you have facebook, like them, they are always posting really good sales. I just had a great sale from Stratford Nappies and they have excellent customer service.

There are some good website suggestions above too!

we use tots bots bamboozles/cotton tots and motherease airflow wraps. I had 27 size 1 nappies mainly as no dryer and i got them all v cheap second hand. I'm just building up a stash of 2nd hand size 2s now but won't need so many.

I use fleece liners, sometimes flushable paper liners if expecting a poo!
