lying to get a job?

To slightly rephrase the question, and offend less people:
Can you hide the fact that you've been signing on from a new employer?
Say you go to an agency, they ask what you've been doing in your employment gap for teh last 6 months, I say ''nothing'' and ask for p46 which I fill out and give back to the agency.
Well strictly speaking telling less than the truth in an attempt to gain employment is a criminal offence, namely "obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception"!
That said, it happens to a greater or lesser extent in a high percentage of applications.
The point is, where do you draw the line?
Somebody wiser than me once said "A man's true character is not in what he does but in what he would do if he knew he would never be found out"!0 -
Hi Sue.
I can see where you are coming from with your examples, although, if im honest, that sounds like a blooming tough interview! Nothing like i've ever experienced, but then, i've tended to always go for basic jobs where I assume the whole interview process is easier than what is maybe typical.
I know nothing about you or the roles that you are applying for. For some jobs, the interview can be as basic as "Do you have an arm or a leg on each corner? Yes? Then start on Monday". But others can be slightly more probing. No way of knowing which way yours will go till you're there, by which time it may be too late.0 -
Look, you have to do whatever you have to do to move forward in this life. Dont get dragged down by negative people and sorts who seem never to have lived. I would estimate most people lie on CVs and employers factor in on what is important and whats not. I take it youre not discussing posts for brain surgery and therefore the most important thing is to get your bum on a seat in front of an interviewer and make an impression. As somebody who has interviewed hundreds of people over the years for my own companies, I can assure you this is whats important in the majority of cases. Sure in some large companies you will find interviewers with a self promoting agenda, not bothered about whats 'best' for the company but you cant win them all. My tip is to not just write, but call companies directly and come across eager and willing. Be proactive and ask questions. Once you are in front of somebody, maintain eye contact, smile and be self assured, never look at a watch or take in a mobile and when given the opportunity ask plenty of questions. Appear humble whilst maintaining an air of confidence (balance thing) Ask about the possibilites to move forward with the company in time etc etc. As per your OP though, youve not lost anything if you dont try as you werent getting interviews in the first place. Lie your !!! off if you have to, the important thing is to get that position and once there, to make sure you give it 100% and prove your undeniable worth.0

you don't need to hide the fact from an employer, you are entitled to sign on, and you won't be the first with a P45 from the JSA agency:)
Exactly what I thought! No need to lie about it, or feel ashamed about having to sign on, but as some other posters have suggested doing some voluntary work will prove to potential employers that you are willing to do something constructive between paid jobs (which is what I'm doing, having recently taken VS)
Good luck with your job search.0 -
Can i just ask but why would you want to hide the fact you have been on job seekers, its not a problem as you make it out to be.0

People have been jailed in the past for lying on their CV.Just a warning to show that lying when applying for jobs is taken seriously in some aspects.0
-
But employers also tell lies about salaries and hours at the interview then when you sign off and take the job the wage suddenly drops. Why are employers allowed to get away with it while a potential employee can be jailed for lying.0

agencies have no care in the world about ur unemployment status, ur just another number on their books so they'll take u on without a second thought. whether they'll ever place u is another story...0
