lying to get a job?

I am looking to register with some agencies soon (which is a bit of a last resort as I hate them but needs must)
Anyway, I don't think that it looks good on your CV to have been on the dole for more than a month or so (which I have) and feel it has reduced my odds of finding a job. (I never get responses to my applications no matter what the job)
Will an agency also look on me unfavourably due to being unemployed for a long time and find it hard to get me work?

Anyway, my question:
What's to stop me saying that I have been travelling abroad during this period?
Or maybe making up a job and getting a friend to vouch for me? (i.e a friend who does own his own business could just lie for me and provide me with a reference and say i've been helping out there)

I fail to see how I can be 'found out'?
One person told me that my P45 would give the game away.
However, I've actually done this before a long time ago, and from memory, I just said that I didn't have a p45,they then gave me a different form to fill in (p46?) and that was the end of it and I got a job through the agency soon after.
So is the person that told me that my p45 would het me found out, wrong?

Without me given an agency certain information, is it possible for them to be able to access tax information which could undermine my 'story'? (Based on my previously mentioned story, it would appear not?)

I know many will disagree with my intentions, but for the sake of this thread, im not looking for a lecture, but more an insight into the process itself and what would lead me to being found out?

tell a lie and there can be later probs,
If for instance you say you were travelling abroad and the agency offered you a job that needs security clearance you would have a hell of a job getting it sorted,

more important is just to tell the truth to the agency and say that you have been looking for work by the usual route(JC),but have had no joy

Instead of looking for ways to pull the wool over the eyes of potential employers, get out there and get some voluntary work and put that on your CV. You can then make a statement that you are proud to have done something with your time whilst undertaking your job search.

Think it is a pretty poor show to come onto the forum to ask for advice on how to lie. That is definitely not in the spirit of these forums.

For the record I don't think this is a lecture but the most sensible route for you to be able to "cover" your period of unemployment.

    Off you pop...
  • Agree with BA. Voluntary work is the way to go. Then you will have some recent work experience and a recent 'employer' referee.

My son, his girlfriend and their lodger all have done voluntary work whilst unemployed. (One managing a small computer network, one helping in a charity shop, one as a cub scout leader). All were able to get up-to-date positive references from their respective supervisors which I'm sure helped a lot towards their eventual job offers.

Good luck with your job search.

ha! Good luck with that! you'll mainy just get people telling you to 'just tell the truth' and not actually helping you with your question.
    That's how this place is.

Anyway, For the main part, you are right, although There are things that can get you caught. Obviously you could say that you travelled and stuff and the interviewer might happen to ask you questions that you cant answer about your experience which could ring alarm bells, for example.

But other than that sort of thing, its very very unlikely that they would ever find out assuming that you have someone to supply a reference. Your actual employment history is not available to potential employers in any kind of background check. HMRC will not share your tax history, even with another government agency

I hope this actually HELPS answer your question rather than the usual avoidance and self righteous replies, lol.

    cheers
  • Why do you not just say you decided to take some time out and reevaluate what you wished to do? I have friends in high paid jobs who over the last 3-5 years have lost them through being made redundant etc and thats what they allays say however they do not sign on .

You say you have applied for jobs but dont get a reply, do you ask for feedback ? do you read over your application before you submit it ?

sorry, you are wrong, for some security cleared jobs you HAVE to state ALL times that you were unemployed and claiming benefits and obtain proof from the JC,and provide 3/5/7 years checkable work refs
also if you say you were overseas travelling you will need a letter from the local police in the areas you stayed to confirm that you did not commit any crimes while there

Absolutely nothing self-righteous with my reply at all. This board is not set up to equip people to lie and the title of the thread was asking just that (as was the content of the post).

The content of my post was entirely valid and actually restrained. I actually feel a lot stronger about the issue and get very angry at people who are looking for people to ratify their dishonesty.

Im aware of that (I having worked for an agency on behalf of other large businesses who outsourced all of their applicant referencing processing to us)
However, I assumed he wasn't going for a job in the police forces or something.

Security work usually carries a 10yr checkable work history. Most government posts would carry a checkable work history. Civilian posts in the police force (which can after all be basic admin and entirely within the realms of being outsourced to agency) carry backgrounds checks.

It is also reasonable to expect that jobs such as call centre work in financial institutions could well carry checkable work histories as well as credit checks.

The OP would be far better looking at ways to positively promote his/her circumstances rather than trying to brush it under the carpet.
