Not sure if this goes in this forum area, could not think where to put it lyk!
Anyway, I have a hotpoint washing macine, had it for about 8 years now; its 1200 spin but recently it seems to have began to 'chew' clothes and when they come out of the washer some clothing have small holes in them as though they have been torn!!
Anyone had similar problems with their washer? or how to combat this??
Thanks

Sounds like the aluminium has degraded to such a point its literally falling apart
Time for a new one methinks, 8 years is a long time for a washing machine. You should be happy you got that out of it:idea:0 -
As a side note, washing 'LIQUID' is generally what kills aluminium drums. You should use powder:idea:0
-
ermmm, its the rubber door seal that needs replacing, the drum inside is NOT aluminium , its stainless steel.0

Sorry, I mean the spider that drives the drum (usually an alloy, the crystals can harm the spider)
A rubber seal tearing clothes?:idea:0 -
hmm it has been going a while lyk. thanks for your replies:), we've always used powder in the drawer thingy, usually from makro or those big 80 washes box.
we have recently been putting comfort softener in the separate drawer thing too since about 18 months.
Its on now lyk, going on the fast spin cycle part ofthe wash, makes a very loud noise as thou the springs on the drum are loose, not sure if thats playing a part in the chewing of parts of clothes??0 -

Washer or Washer / Drier?
Damage to laundry inside a washing machine can commonly be caused by :
Getting trapped in the gap between the revolving drum and the door seal if the gap is too large or the door seal is becoming worn (Avoid overloading)
If the machine is a washer dryer, overloading can cause laundry to catch on the dryer vent at the top of the door seal
An item can gete stuck inside the tub underneath the drum, and laundry can snag on it when it gets pushed through the holes in the drum during spin. (underwires from a bra can get trapped on the heating element)
Worn or collapsed drum bearings or a broken drum shaft can cause the drum to scrape on the heater and the laundry would snag on the heater or heater bracket (The washing machine would be pretty noisy on spin)
A coin or similar can have damaged the drum and put a small sharp hole in it. (Examine the drum closely for any tears or holes with sharp edges)
Bleach: if the holes are just in one part of a garment it can be caused by bleach
Occasional tears can be caused by zips, bra underwires and other metal objects on garments
Normal wear and tear, particularly if the damage is on cuffs, collars, waistbands and seams
