    But she would still lose her single person's council tax discount.

    Do hope the old lady doesn't rent from the council, surely subletting and then trying to claim HB won't be allowed.

    It sounds like it's not rent she's charging but being a family friend it's what i'd call keep if it's £50 all in and depending on your wage there could be non-dependant deductions to consider.
    Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
