mycorrhizal fungi, it occurs naturally in the soil and forms a network onto the plants roots and helps them absorb minerals in the soil better in return for some of their sugar. Putting it in the planting hole just helps it to establish quicker

Both of those rootstock would be fine in pots.

But all will do better in the ground if you have the space.
