Hi ,
I have an 05 Renault Trafic van with high mileage (180k) that has seized rear calipers.
Is it worthwhile paying for new parts or should i just get them from a scrapyard?

Personally I would use new / rebuilt.
Is it an 'exchange' item?
What are the relative costs?0 -
New renault - £190 per side plus VAT (exchange)
Recon ebay - £100 (Inc VAT)per side (£25 refund for exchange)
Used - £75 (inc VAT) both (30 Day Warranty)
Used - £110 (inc VAT) both (90 Day Warranty)
All plus fitting but i might try fitting myself dependign on how much that will cost.
Big cost difference between used/new.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
Have a look at the service kits for the caliper.. about £15 and easy to do... Failing that chuck a recon one on...0

In your circumstances I'd probably go for the recon in that case.0 -
I'd put used/recon ones on for that price. Unless it was a Mk3 Mondeo, in which case new, new, new lol0

recon ones for £150 for both and fit them yourself, it should only take a couple of hours max, with a cuppa.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

As the rear calipers are a bit of a problem on a lot of vans and cars these days then what is the chance that the ones in the scrapyard are any better.
As already said, if there is a known issue then go for new/recon.
There is some times where moneysaving isn't advised, one of these times is brakes.
But looking at the above prices and the fact your van is only 6 years old, then I would fit new.
If they only lasted 6 years from new then the recons might only last 3 years. It would depend how well they were reconditioned.0 -
That's very expensive for the used calipers. I would want to pay £20-£30.ZootHornRollo wrote: »New renault - £190 per side plus VAT (exchange)

cheers all.
I went for the recon option.
I might try to do them this weekend if i they arrive before next week. The last car i removed a caliper on was a 1985 Honda Accord. Is there anything that might catch me out on a more modern braking system? The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

Not in my opinion they don't seem to differ much rears are usually easier too, Would be a good time to fit new discs and pads too if it need them ?
Also might be worth seeing if the ones you remove can be serviced ?0
