Insurance for taxing a car

I want to tax my old car so I can sell it. Would temporary insurance be enough to enable me to do this?

Thanks in advance

why do you want temp insurance to tax it,if kept on the road or taken for a test drive it will need insurance on it anyway

It will need to be insured to be driven by a 3rd party for a test drive. Unless you are selling it to a dealer, who will then use Trade Plates.
  • let the buyer insure it, and throw in the cash for tax

You can't use a temp policy to tax a car as they don't send you an original certificate, just an emailed one that you print off for your records.

This is to stop people buying a weeks insurance, taxing the car and then driving whilst uninsured.

If you check the websites you will find they mention it there.

There are exceptions, you can tax your car with a one month Hire & Reward Insurance cover note, as they are normally issued by a broker who gives you a proper cover note.

If you go to an auction that does the Driveaway Insurance deal then the T&C are printed up on the wall beside the phone and laminated.

depends on your local PO,they should accept it as it is a valid insurance document,a lot of insurance companies nowadays dont send 'hard' copies just email printouts

I have had a few temp policies over the yearsm normally to move a car from an auction house to an MOT test or similar, none have allowed me to tax a car, it is a specific exclusion listed in the T&C if the policy.

As I said there may be exceptions, the lack of a proper certificate is only one issue, though as far as I know a PO isn't supposed to accept photocopies or printouts for roadtax.

I would never try and palm off a printed copy as a proper certificate, but that is just me.
