Longest Life Lightbulb?

I have a double hight 'void' over my stairs, the lightbulb has blown and I'm going to have to hire a ladder to change it. Obviously I don't want to have to do this again in the near future, so what's the longest life lightbulb?

The area has side light from other fittings, so the bulb doesn't have to be the brightest.

Many thanks in advance.

Well, a low energy bulb - assumimg the luminaire is open both at the top and bottom.

I'm looking at the low energy ones, they seem to vary a bit in their 'rated life', I've found one that supposed to last for 8000 hours, does anyone know of any that last longer?

Much as I hate them, a CFL or LED is your only real option if you want a "long lasting" lamp.

What I would say though is spend the extra £1 or so on a branded lamp (eg, Philips, Osram, etc) rather than the cheap crap that supermarkets tend to sell.

A low energy bulb will last longer if not continually switched off and on. Better to switch on for the evening and then leave on.

I can wholeheartedly recommend these from philips - http://www.wickes.co.uk/philips-20w-bc-tornado-cfl-spiral-bulb/invt/205212/

No - are you buying branded bulbs? If so, you may need to get your electrics checked.
