Carpet underlay felt v foam?

About to lay a carpet in the new build. It will be on the stairs and upstairs only. We are trying to acheive a build quality that will meet the criteria "It will see me out" so we want it to last.
Which should I get felt or foam and what thickness. I am erring to the felt ie more natural etc.
But I'm getting conflicting views on the subject any ideas?

Usually hessian backed carpet is laid onto foam underlay. The better the quality of the underlay the increased longevity of the carpet.
Not sure how long it will need to last to 'see you out'. If you think you might not wake up the day after tomorrow then use paper. If you are an optimist then buy the best quality you can lay your hands on.;)0
