They cannot make you, so if you are worried just walk out. There is no legal power to detain someone short of arresting someone and a Tesco worker has no right to arrest you and therefore no right to detain you. If someone is making you accompany them, get your mobile out and threaten to call the police regarding wrongful arrest.
If you need to quote anything then powers of arrest are covered in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE for short), and even police who have attempted to detain someone without first arresting them have been prosecuted as there is no lawful detention short of arrest.
Perhaps the OP might want to consider suing Tesco for unlawful detention or kidnap - she was held to ransome for her DTD voucher - "it's your voucher or your life madam!":rotfl:On a serious note though, can you imagine the bad press? Yes, she was flouting the T&C's but to quote a quote "if you want to profess to being the cheapest, it helps if you actually ARE the cheapest" Can only look bad on Tesco me thinks - I'm sure you are only a stuggling mum trying to make ends meet, and I'm sure you gave plenty of those easter eggs to needy kiddies?0 -

This is why playing within the rules is important - if we all take the mickey then the deal will be withdrawn. We should be looking at the long term picture0 -
dtdsearcher wrote: »To be fair I had definitely been 'creative' to get round the terms and conditions, and it is borderline deception in order to obtain monetary vouchers. So I'm happy enough with just being banned from Tesco as we all know Asda is cheaper anyway.
Was it a permanent ban? Mine was for 3 months.
Also, not sure if it helps, but one of the Tesco managers (whose wife I work with) explained that Tesco have no policy or practice of passing details round on customers who are banned. Indeed, in my local not a single one of the security cameras has worked for over a year, and they don't want to pay to fix it.0 -
I personally would have refused to go into the office and attempted to leave the store ..
If the held you and phoned the police then surele'y you are breaking Tesco terms and conditions by going over their 100 pound limit whichwould be a civil offence ?..
Unless of course you have been altering numbers on the vouchers to other receipts then it could be fraud or something ????
just a thought ....
Refusing is exactly what you should do.0 -
dtdsearcher wrote: »You are quite right, but from other postings on here over the last few weeks I would suggest that other people are doing the same. Lets be clear though, I didn't get caught out because I was recognised, neither the SA or the supervisor had seen me before, it was because neither of them had seem the vouchers before and didn't know how to deal with them that HO were contacted.
The reason for my post was not for scaremongering, but to warn the others that are doing numerous shops (for friends, family, aunties etc....) that if the SA and supervisor don't know how to deal with the vouchers and HO are called that they just check that the coupon payment on your receipt is on the same email address that is all - I am sure that if the 'coupon' email address on your receipt matches the new one on the voucher they wouldn't look any further in to it, but mine didn't and I was just warning others to be careful from now on.Oh no total not enough for voucher.......quick run..go find something...come onlook harder...your holding up the ques..just grab something..anything everyones looking....0 -
May i ask did u go into tthis store more than once a day? Also the respassing charge is an idol threat, per their t and c they can stop u using vouchers but shouldnt be able to ban u. I would avoid getting head office to check it off etc
I never went in to any store more than once a day, and usually alternated my route so I didn't go in the same store 2 days running. It wasn't because they recognised me that it was flageed up, just that they didn't know how to use the vouchers.0 -

From reading the post, most of the ordeal occured after he went backstore with the SA. Just refuse to go.0 -

That would be awesome - can you imagine checkout after checkout of DTD's - it would be like a revolution - "up the shoppers" "shame on Tesco" chant on repeat whilst waiting in line!:rotfl:0 -

A quick word of warning based on my experiences of today.
I went to do my first DTD shop today and the SA was checking the voucher as normal - had never seen one before and said one of the numbers didn't match (why Tesco haven't fixed this by now - god knows) so called over the supervisor. Fine. It was a supervisor I hadn't seen before so I wasn't worried. However, this SA had never seen one before and wouldn't accept it for the same reason (one number didn't match). Told her they are all like that and to check with HO if she wanted to. I went with her to customer services and she rang head office who confirmed to her that that was the way the vouchers came out - they then asked me to confirm my email address to verify it was my voucher before I could use it. Confirmed the email address I had 'created' to enter the details for this voucher (I made up a new email address each day for my set of vouchers - did 5 shops a day and this way never exceeded my £100 limit) He then said that the supervisor had advised him that there was a coupon payment on the receipt for a certain figure and I had told her that was a DTD voucher.
I was then taken through to the back to talk privately...........
So when I spoke to him again, the first thing that he said that that figure did not match any of the figures of the vouchers sent to the email address that I had given him, so he asked what email address the voucher I paid for my previous shopping had been generated from. Told him (and at this point we both realised that he knew the 'patttern' of the email addresses that I was using) - I won't say what the pattern is on here, but pretty basic.
He said that he was satisfied that I had deliberately made up email addresses in order to get round the terms and conditions of obtaining £100 per month, and it was obvious I had to be fair.
At that point he told me that I was barred from every Tesco in the country and that my image was on the CCTV and that the picture would be sent to every store, and if I went in any Tesco store again I would be tresspassing and that they would press charges against me.
I've gone over it pretty quickly here, but it was nearly 3 hours from when I entered the shop until I left, and I had my 2 year old with me.
Just be careful when input your email addresses for your vouchers, they are obviously tightening things up a bit, so my advice would be keep the vouchers on a cycle of the same email address (if that makes sense) - even if you have 4 or 5 email addresses on the go at once, try to keep your new voucher 'linked' to the previous voucher by email address to stop things like this happening again.
It was good while it lasted but my DTD days are over (even if the tresspassing charge was an idol threat, I don't want to risk it - wouldn't be worth it) so it's now down to my better half to be the DTD'er. Just means we will now get 4 DTD shops a week rather than 5 a day.
Hope this information hels some people.
I am sorry to hear that this has happened to you.
After someone posted on the forum the other day about head office asking for email address. Your best bet is to say " not sure, my partner does all the computing stuff I am just the shopper"
You should never have gone out the back. You must remain in full view of everyone as they know that if they get you alone out the back you will feel intimidated. There is no problem playing dumb. Do not volunteer information. As for being banned. If you signed a document confirming this then they may have grounds to ban you.
Never give any information. You are only ever obliged to answer questions by police if you are arrested. Tesco management have no authority to make you answer questions
Play dumb. If you are making up email addresses. Don't guess which one it was. Say I am not sure as I am no good with computers, would you like me to go home and confirm the email address with my partner so you can confirm it with your head office?
Don't worry about this. You need to send your other half out shopping and you can be at home on the computer arranging DTD for them
Give it 6 months or 1 year you can go back

Does anyone know if the T metro on Market St Manchester works for DTD??
TIA
The white wine is also chilled ready for you!
They also seem to have seen enough vouchers to know what to do with them.
I've used it twice this week.
NB they have no Betty Crockers, Lamb, Beef, but they do have Wolf Blass, Bikini shavers, Right Guard and Finish Tabs.
Enjoy.I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove a thing!
