Hi

I'd imagine this is the sort of thing that gets asked a lot, but when I did a search it was bringing up quite old threads so hope someone will humour me and answer.

I would like to get an email address (domain?) with my own name or similar. I tried googling but it came up with so many results that I wasn't sure which might be recommended/ reputable.

I currently just use a yahoo address but would prefer something that sounds a bit more professional.

Understand I'll have to pay a small annual fee which is fine but don't want to end up signing up to something dodgy/scammy.

Thanks for any advice.

You just need to own the domain and get hosting for it. So for example buy yourname.com and get hosting and generally with the hosting you get at least one email address included in the price (normally you get 5 or even 10)

Nearly any site you see on google for domain purcahsing or hosting will be ample, just go gor the cheapest as there are just different packages available. If you only want the email address then the bare minimum package wil do for you.

I always point people towards "google apps" if they want emails. http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html
No matter what where they get their domain from, it's free and easy to set up.

There's no need to get web hosting for your domain.

I bought a domain name (myname.co.uk) from 123-reg.co.uk (cost about £2/year I think), then set it up to forward emails to my GMX account (myname@gmx.co.uk). I set up my email client to collect the mail from GMX, and set the "from" field to me@myname.co.uk.

The end result is that I'm using my free GMX account, but when I send emails they appear to be from my "proper" domain, and anything sent to my "proper" domain is redirected to my GMX account.

Yeah, you can do it that way but if the potential is to eventually have a site too perhaps (for any number of reasons) then for the sake of £10 per year (or some other piddly amount) you may aswell.get hosting.

no point in buying hosting till/unless you need it..

another +1 for google apps here..

also when your buying your domain be wary of the offers , 1 year @ 99p may sound good till you see the price of them the following years..

plenty of ones to have also. .com .me .co.uk etc so look at the prices

loads of places to get from .. godaddy , 123 reg etc

If you want web hosting for your own (non-business) purposes, you can get it free from a number of providers (I use zoka.cc). If you want hosting for your business, you're going to want a decent level of service and reliability, which will cost a lot more than £10/year... so you might as well wait till you actually have a use for it.

Many thanks for your replies all.

I've set up a domain and I'm going to look into the google apps bit next.

I use 1&1 for my e mail domain service, but, if you're sorted, then never mind.
