Lodgers Responsibilities

  • If you cleaned the bathroom after you used it then it wouldn't get dirty would it! I most definitely wouldn't have you living in my house! I don't understand why you think your LL should clean up "your" dirt! If you want him to do that then pay him extra as a cleaner!

Normally lodgers would be expected to clean the spaces which are for their exclusive use and share the responsibility for the cleaning of the other parts of the property.

It would have been sensible to have discussed the cleaning issue with your landlord as you're a Monday-to-Friday lodger but I don't see anything wrong at all in being expected to keep that shared bathroom clean between yourself and the other lodger. Honestly, it's a five-minute job if you both clean up after yourselves when you use it. You're not staying in a hotel!

Yes I undersstand your point, but he did start cleaning the bathroom and as I stated rules regarding this were never discussed, so obviously I understood it to be his responsibility as he had started out that way.
Maybe I have high standards, but when I have lodgers in my own home I keep every area that they may use clean as I see it as a second income so I don't want them to feel they are living in an unclean house.

You obviously don't have that high standards if you don't even clean the bathroom out after you have been in there!

Yes, in my own home where I am responsible for cleaning up after myself, not when I am paying to stay elsewhere.
It's always good to use an exclamation mark when you have nothing to say
  • I have been in both situations as I was a lodger when I moved for a job until I was able to buy and have lodgers.
I had my own bathroom where I was renting and cleaned it regularly even though the LL used to hoover and clean again when I was out on the weekend. My agreement was Mon-Fri which wasn't ideal but I knew what I signed up for and got on with it.
I also cleaned the kitchen and other areas- even hung washing and did the washing up for the other logers and LL at times.
When I took logers in to my home I made the rules very clear and although I hoover once a week they know to keep their own bathrooms clean along with the areas they share.
I would recommend that you come up with a cleaning schedule with the other lodger to keep the bathroom clean in future.

Thanks for your constructive opinion, most of the other comments are argumentative and aggresive. Yes you are definately right about agreeing a cleaning schedule and I will discuss this at my next place, it all comes with experience I suppose.

it all comes down to personality

last year for work purposes I was temporarily in a house with a (single) landlady and 2 male and 1 female lodgers. The LL rules were:
    - she did the washing for all, what you wanted washed you put in the basket, she thus had absolute control over how often the machine was used.
    - She cleaned the whole house, it was her house and if she did the cleaning it meant it got done to her standards.
    - each person was expected to do their own washing up on the basis we all ate at different times and the next user should not have to clean up from others before they could cook
    - she was used to being a mother but they were not family so were expected to do things for themselves

I have 1 male and 1 female lodger in my own home:
    - I clean the house, it is my house and I make sure it is to my standard. Experience shows neither lodger will clean to an acceptable standard, I would not expect them to, they are paying to live there but it is not their property and they are not incentivised to look after it.
    - each person does their own cooking and I constantly have to "remind" them to wipe down surfaces after use
    - each person cleans the bath or shower after use, Ithey used it it is their responsibility. I clean the floor and tiles, it is my house, it is my responsibility to clean common areas and surfaces
    - we each do our own washing, they pay rent, they are entitled to use the machine as much as they need to as they are being charged an all inclusive rate, I take a business risk that I have got my pricing right. I am neither their mother nor their servant, I will not wash someone else's smalls :o so I do not charge extra for services - which is a taxable payment anyway not covered by the rent a room scheme allowance
  • you sound dumb, just cos he cleaned it a few times doesnt make it his responsibility. Your bathroom so u have to clean it, even as a shared bathroom u wud have to keep it clean after yourself
