New address, new credit card. Which way to do it?

Hi guys,

This is my first post here but I was recommended this forum as a knowledgeable source for my query. :)

I'm in a transitional period of my life, essentially moving into my own proper place (excluding student residence) for the first time. It's taking me a while so I'm honestly not sure where I actually "live" right now, so I don't believe to say I live at my parents' address is fraudulent right now.

Basically, the news that Egg credit cards are becoming Barclaycards has made me look at getting a new card - maybe a Play or Amazon one for their voucher deals - as I'll lose my Egg Money. I've been with Egg for about 7 years.

I'm just wondering how to go about applying for a new card with the address change imminent.
Do I change my address now with Egg (someone has told me that the new address will be linked to my 7 year history, so that sounds good), and then apply for a new card?
Do I just apply for a new card with the new address then sort out all the Egg stuff later?
Or do I apply for a new card with my old address and then later change it?

Just wanting to do the 'right' thing both for myself (I don't want to hurt my credit history as I know moving can do that) and from a legal standpoint, hence asking now whilst I'm quite literally between the two places!

Thanks in advance.

You need to apply using the address you're registered on the Electoral Roll at (as verified by a CRA search) to give yourself the best chance of acceptance.
  • That's still my parents' house too. If I were to change that before applying for a new card would I have any issue?

Perhaps. It can take three months for the electoral roll to update on credit reports.
  • It would be better to apply for credit before you move house because credit providers prefer stability. A recent house move will mark you down in this respect.
