:mad:Hi all, i recently had problems wiv my mondeo 2.0 tdci 2003, it was smoking like me gran and sounded like a tractor, so, i took it to my my local garage, after being recommended by a friend. B4 he opened the bonnet all 3 mechs said, "timing chain tensioner and possibly hydrolic lifters. OK i thought they know their stuff, so i left it with them to test drive and ge me a quote, next day first thing , i get a call, "its what we said fault wise and its gona cost £460.00 NO MORE... Great i said carry on .He then said it will take a couple of days, so a week later i went up to see what was going on, they told me it was a bit more wrong with it and they would sort it out, they were waiting for an indenticle engine to turn up to salvage parts off, not very happy but i was stuck .so they carried on... £ more weeks later and me goin up the garage every week but no difference, the spare engine still not turned up !!!. He told me i cud take the car back if i paid him the £460, but the car was exactly the same, so i said NO. the following week he had gone away on holiday for 10 days, so still no car back, when he returned i went up to see him and give him a mouth full.. BUT, he told me they have found the fault and i have a valve or 2 gone...He then told me my cam shaft was rusty and needed renewal... All in a total of £1000.00.. BL**DY H***.........
He fitted a second hand cyliner head becos a new camshaft and all the bits would cost more than the car...He finished the job and i test drove it, you guessed, still smking and rattling, i asked why and he told me, it needs to burn the oil/diesel out of the exhaust and the engine needs to settle, so i gave it a week and 200 miles and its still the same. He has agreed to have a look but i dont trust him but cant afford to take it else where..
To sum up, he put a 2nd hand head, new timing chain set and charged me £1000.00 and had my car, not for just 2 days as promised but 6 weeks and still the same problem...
what should i do please...
sorry to bore you all..
many thanks.....micky.

When mine did that it was a split turbo to intercooler pipe which is a common fault. £80 including fitting at the main Ford dealer.
I took it to the main dealer for diagnosis simply to avoid the kind of grief you've had.He then told me my cam shaft was rusty and needed renewal
You have been well and truly royally ripped off by a garage staffed by morons who don't know their arze from their elbow. Something that lives in the engine and is constantly lubricated by oil cannot go rusty unless you've not used it for several months.
I strongly suggest you take it to a main dealer and pay for a proper diagnostic. Once you've got that in writing, demand a full refund from this cowboy and haul him through court if you need to. And then you need to get a shotgun and shoot your friend.
BTW, even if the part about burning off the oil in the exhaust had any basis in reality, your car should still be running properly.0 -
personally i would of paid the 460 and be done with that garage and gone to another for a second opinion.
cam was a bit rusty? a valve or two gone. salvaged second hand engine to fit bits off (got to ask yourself what was that salvage engine like?) and after saying that should of rung alarm bells as to his outfit.
a competant mechanic would of done a compression test to see if anything was wrong cylinder and valve wise.
put it on a diagnostic machine ODBII reader to see if there were any problems through any of its many sensors.
running like a bag of bolts and a bit of smoking could simply of been a lambda sensor down causing it to over fuel and chug/ or that a turbo seal had gone. or eaven easier a air leak.
DONT TAKE IT BACK.
go to another repitable garage like a ford specialist independant in your area (or main stealer) and let one of them do some diagnosing.
OH and go get your cylinder head back ITS YOURS and have it tested to back you up in court. i.e nothing will be wrong with it and proves his incompitance.
your friend must like living on the edge.0 -
I don't know if this will help you....
I had black smoke problem with my Mondeo 2.0 tdci mkIII which cost me about ~£90 to put right at a diesel specialist garage.
My car's problem was with a split hose between the EGR valve and the intercooler. It was a Ford dealer part ~£60 + ~£30 labour. It took the garage probably about 20 mins to change and about 10mins for a test drive afterwards.
Prior to this, for weeks I had played about with cleaning the EGR valve but never spotted that the split in the hose was out of sight at the top of the hose near the jubilee clip. I even took this hose off whilst checking the EGR valve. I was sooooo close to the problem but just did not spot it. Apparently, this problem is common on these cars. The hose can be changed very easily.0 -
fords have allways been very tempermental with regards to pipe work. any split allways sent them into a hissy fit (im sure they inherit a certain human like temperment :P) no matter what year they were built, they just seemed to hate a leaky pipe no matter how small the plit or hole was. i can remeber my friends serires 2 rs turbo he had about 5 years ago, we were travelling allong a busy duel carriege way and without warning the engine just stalled, forcing us to pul on hard shoulder, we got to trouble shoot thinking hey ignition coil etc died, tested that sparking great, all sparking perfect in all leads. we stripped, tested everything we could see and no avail so we started taking off and retightening the pipe work boost hoses oil breathers etc it still wouldnt start, then i wrapped my hand around the alloy intake housing that goes from rocker to inlet manifold at the intercooler outlet end to make sure it was sealed and it fired up after three or four turns. the jubilee clip was slightly distorted allowing a small amount of air to pass and not quite clamping the silicone boost pipe.0

Yours was exactly the same problem as mine. When mine failed, any engine speed above 1700RPM produced a large cloud of black smoke and when accelerating, it was jerking like hell so you put your foot down which meant even more black smoke and anyone following couldn't see.0 -
Mine also had this pipe split, luckily I had read an online article about this very same fault a few weeks beforehand so I fixed it for the price of a new pipe at Ford.
I actually just cleaned my EGR valve last week, and I couldn't believe the crap in there, actually i don't think my EGR valve was ever cleaned, definately not cleaned in the 60k+ I have done in the car, the stuff in there was like tar, yuk, car drives much better now.0
