Gas Bills

would you say £120 per qtr for a 2 bed flat with a new condensing-combi boiler with heating on for about 5-6 hrs per day (& with a thermostat) is excessive for a gas bill? Its an actual meter reading but still.....
You gotta be in it to win it, and who knows you might even get a Brucie!

Sounds expensive to me. By coincidence, my last gas bill was £120, and that is with BG which is supposed to be one of the more expensive providers. I live in a detached 2 bed bungalow with total 9 radiators, run off a combi boiler. There is only me in the house, so depending on your circumstances, maybe I use less hot water? On the other hand, I am disabled, so feel the cold a lot and am at home all day, so my heating is running pretty much all the time, apart when I'm out, or asleep. I do have room thermostats on all radiators though, which are kept low in the rooms I don't use so much. I also keep the doors closed to each room, so they come to temperature and then just cycle.
I also get a discount for paying by DD, and another for having both gas and electricity from BG. Could get another £10 off by going internet only, but haven't got that far yet.
Hope this helpsI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Yes that is expensive. Are they actual or estimated readings? was the reading they started from correct? Even for BG it sounds a bit steep.Midas.0

Yes actual readings, with BG and a new meter so no errors there.... maybe theres a leak somewhere in the system...... :mad:You gotta be in it to win it, and who knows you might even get a Brucie!0

Its on the high side as a yearly average but not excessively so - but if its for the winter quarter I would say it is pretty good.
Gas cooking, use baths rather than shower, frequent use of washing machine all will have an affect.
The insulation of the walls and roof(if top floor flat) as well as the size of windows and if they are double glazed will also affect consumption.Robert0 -
personally, i dont think its at all bad
u hav to remember that bills arriving now are usually the highest of the year
for starters they will include the christmas period, when most of us are off work and at home more, with our heating on all day
also - at christmas most people tend to turn the heating up a notch ("cos afterall its christmas")
got my gas bill in recently, nearly 200 squids
hav 2 bed house, use heating 5-6 hours per day
only use gas for heating and water n tend to use elec shower more than bath
hope this helps to ease ur mind...0 -

crikey where do you live Buckingham Palace? I was a bit put out I had to put my DD up from £13 to £18 recently, do you have a lot of gas appliances or just heating on constant(is that £80 every month or just over winter months)?0

LOL, no that is £80 per month, every month. I know it's extortionately high and I'm doing every thing I can to get it down, the trouble is that I have arthritis and 3 children, it means that if I get cold my whole body seizes up and I am unable to look after them. So we do have to have the heating on constant but I keep it at the lowest temperature I can and try to keep my cooking as economical as possible.
It doesn't help that the house is 200 years old and very drafty, I want to switch companies too which I've found will save me £30 per month but we can't do that untl we are nearing a credit balance with Npower.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

According to USwitch, if we switch to (racking my brains now) I think it's SWALEC or Southern we will shave £30 a month of our gas bills, but even if that's not correct and it's only half that then it's still money that can go somewhere else.
Thanks to this board yesterday I remember that we have a dial on the boiler too, it's a back boiler so I tend not to think about it until I have to have it serviced. I discovered that it was on Max so I have switched it down to 3 now.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
