Retain NCB without car?

No insurable interest in the vehicle so don't quite see how that'd work?
access to and being allowed to use a friends/relatives' car is a benefit and therefore you can insure against the loss of that benefit due to an accident.
This to my mind meets the definition of insurable interest and that's before you start thinking about your RTA responsibilities not to mention any agreement you might come to with the cars owner re responsibility for costs should the car be damaged whilst in your care0 -
Can't answer your specific question of keeping no claims entitlement but when I have spoken to car insurance co's re oh as a named driver on my insurance(he overseas) they basically came back with "Has he a British Passport" which he has which in their eyes made him resident.Always check though!0

The easiest way is wait until your NCB is about to run out, insure a friend or relatives’ car and then cancel the policy within 14 days, you might end up paying a cancellation fee but you then get an up to date statement of NCB which will cover you for another two years.
That would be an easy route for me. When I am back in the UK I have a couple of relatives who just put me on their insurance for a while. (Insurance co's know the situation, it's never been an issue). I will look into this, and try to arrange to be in the UK at the appropriate time, and hopefully I'll be able to work something out that way. ThanksWhen I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -

You lose your NCB?! I've got full NCB and am considering going away to work for a couple of years too - eek! How long is it valid from your last insured vehicle?
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0 -

Depends on the new insurance company, generally two years, a couple will do three but all could change between now and when you need to re-insure.0
