More than one motor insurance policy?

Does anyone know if it is legal or illegal to have more than one insurance policy on a vehicle at the same time? I am having problems with my old insurance company saying that I owe money for a change over period to a new insurance company because I didn't inform them in time, but this would mean that there would be two insurance policies for the same car at the same time. Can they legally claim this money? Can anyone help?

It isn't illegal no.
So, assuming the following - your first insurer auto-renewed your policy and placed you on cover for another year. In the mean time you found a quote elsewhere and took out a policy with the new insurer. You are now tring to cancel the renewed policy from the first insurer?
Send the first insurer proof of insurance with the new company to prove that you were insured at the time. They should be able to cancel the cover back to the start. You will still have to pay any cancellation charges due but this should avoid the time on risk charge.0 -
It is not unlawful to have multiple plans. It is unlawful to put in multiple claims.
However, providers will usually refund premiums where you can show dual insurance but you will normally have to pay cancellation charges because of your error.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
