Backpacking with a Blackberry?

Hi, Planning my year off and considering getting a Blackberry/PDA thing for email when i'm abroad. Planning to go to some pretty remote places and would like to be able to stay in touch while halfway up a mountain (don't think there are too many internet cafes there!)

Anyone have any experience of backpacking with a blackberry? What are the costs like using it abroad and is it cheaper, more conveinent than using an internet cafe? Is getting a signal a problem?

Any help appreciated,

BBB

Well if you are up a mountain in the middle of nowhere do you think you are going to get phone reception (which is what you will need for a Blackberry to work). Only sure fired way is via sat phone, but the cost will probably be out of your reach.

  • it's all down to the network you're with in the UK (in terms of roaming charges), and the signal quality of where you're going to be.

I travelled a lot with a Blackberry and it was great till about a year ago as T-Mobile were not charging for their BBerry roaming (due to a technical fault, mind you) but they have now fixed it and its still great but quite costly at £7.50 a MB

Still cheap if you only send receive short emails, but if u get a lot of SPAM, it can add up...

    hope this helps somewhat
