hey.
I graduated last summer and have managed to get a graphics job in welwyn garden city!
thing is, im moving there within the next month and i dont really have any idea on wheres good to stay or not in the area.
preferably id like to be within walking distance of the train station as my work is right beside there plus theres that massive sports centre which im definitely going to go to!
if anyone could give me more information on the area i would greatly appreciate it as i cant really seem to find much online!
also as i am moving out for the first time i have no idea about flat viewings. im planning on going down next week for a couple of days so should i organise viewings NOW or just wait till a couple of days before?
thanks!

I would'nt bother. Lived there once and was the worst six months of my life. It's a sh*thole.0

i kind of have too tbh!
i was planning on living nearer central london so i could be near everything but its way too expensive when commuting costs are involved!0 -
WGC isn't great but like most places it has it's good and bad areas. I'd probably take a drive area at different times during the day (if you can spare the time, hire a car for the day for cheap if you don't have one).
If you're not sure about WGC then check what other places are near on the train/bus (you can pretty much look anywhere from Hatfield to Watford to Stevenage etc when you're working in WGC)
Compare how much rent is in the different areas and then add on travel costs if it's not in WGC. Maybe you could ask your new employers if they could recommend any areas?
Make sure you visit lots of different estate agents as well as they will probably give you different accounts of what is 'good' and 'bad' places to live (based on what they have avaliable to rent)
How far are you moving from? If it's commutable then maybe work there for a couple of weeks so you can speak to colleagues and get a feel for the area and then look at renting a place.0 -
I would disagree with post #2 really.. I went to school there and there are plenty of nice parts. Basically the west side of the railway is the 'good side', what I know of the east part is ok but parts of it aren't great. For example panshanger is a nice enough place but a bit of a walk to the station. Digswell (closer to welwyn village) is decent and also has its own station
I've never looked at any kind of renting etc round there, I'd suspect that most of the available rentals will be on the east just because of the style of housing, and that anything on the west would be more expensive
From experience living in Hatfield for 18+ years I would avoid 99% of it, and the other 1% isn't in rental areas.0 -
There are a lot of new build developments in the area if that is your cup of tea (Scholar's Walk is quite nice). Digswell and Oaklands are 'millionaire' territory, Panshangar is well dodgy. It's expensive to rent down there (500 for a studio, 800 for a two bed flat last I checked) so if money is tight you might want to try Stevenage (if you can find a nice bit, like Great Gables) or there were some deals to be had in KnebworthEmergency savings: 4600

im moving down from glasgow and i dont drive. Plus im planning on going down one or two days next week to look at as many flats as possible and then choose one. I cant really afford to do that just now, but it would be idiotic if i never!
Most of the places available for rent seem to be on the east and south side of the station.
Again because of the wage i will be on, i will be just renting a room and flat sharing, and also as it will help me get to know some people in the area.
if anyone has any other further tips or advice i would greatly appreciate it!0 -
