E.On discounts

My FixOnline 7 tariff with E.On will end on May 1st. They are proposing putting me onto their EnergyOnline tarrif if I do nothing. Based on my actual 2010 usage, this will increase my cost by 26% and is a variable rate tariff. I don't think so!
I like the capped tariffs and one of the cheapest according to uSwitch is one from edfenergy, capped until Sep 2013 and will increase my annual cost by 28%. Painful, but at least it's capped for a decent length of time.
I know E.On don't give discounts on their final statements and my current tariff has a big discount. I'm due my next statement in June, so should I wait until then to switch, or will I get the discount anyway so long as I wait until just after May 1, when the tariff has ended?
Anyone any experience of this?

    Hi victor2

Provided you've completed the full term of Fixonline 7 up to the end date on 1 May 2011, you'll receive all the discount applicable to this tariff even if part of this falls within the final bill.

The only discount you'll lose is for the period between 2 May 2011 and the date the supply switches.

It usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks to change supplier. Therefore, you should be safe starting the switch any time now.

Hope this answers your question victor2. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

I'm in the same position and have been looking at options. In addition to the EDF 2013 there is also the 2015 which is only slightly more but gives you another 2 years fixed. The main difference between the 2 is 2013 has a standing charge and 2015 doesn't it has T1 & 2 instead. For me the difference between these 2 worked out at £17pa. However they are both over £100 more than EnergyOnline 6.

Having checked the EO6 rates its only £80 (11%) more than FO7. Is your 26% increase based on what a comparison site says or what you have calculated yourself? The reason I ask it the large difference in percentage increase between the 2 of us. Over the last 12 months my total cost was £740.

Put my actual kWh usage for 2010 into a spreadsheet and calculated the total cost, including discounts and VAT as follows:
    FO7: £1032
    EnergyOnline: £1306 (+26%)
My spreadsheet hit the uSwitch calculation for edf 2013 to within a penny. It came out at £1332. Will have to look at the 2015 tariff. Thanks for the info on that.

EDF have just brought out another product fixed until Sept 2012. This replaces the fixed saver I signed up for recently but is somewhat dearer and only a few pounds cheaper than the 2013 fix.

Victor2, prob with your spreadsheet is it does not have details of other Eon products, so unless you're determined to be on a capped/fixed product then Eon Save Online 6 is an exceptionally competitve rate, but is a variable unit rate tariff

Of course not, but then again comparison sites don't always have current tariffs on them if they are no longer available. I use the sites to suggest which tariffs are supposedly the best, then research a bit further and plug the rates into my spreadsheet to see how it looks. I can then "tweak" my usage and see what differences it would make. Sad I know, but it keeps me quiet!;)
I do lean towards capped rates, you can't budget with a variable one and over the past 4 years, I've come out ahead on capped ones, even with their higher initial costs.

But if you look at capped deals against cheapest online variable tariffs, if you have come out ahead, only just and you've been paying more during the times when prices are not going up, might as well have the savings now, than pay a high capped deal with the hope prices go up in the future - I'm realsitic, prices will go up, but why pay more now to be proved right!!

It's horses for courses really. I like to know what I'll be paying and don't mind paying a bit more up front to do that.
EOn's SaveOnline 6 works out at 12% more when I compare my present FixOnline 7 tariff to it, using my actual usage for 2010. Don't know what I would have paid if I'd been on their best variable rate tariff for the year and changed to always be on the best one. Probably would have cost me more in the long run, but as you say, you have to pay more initially to gain later. I'm not prepared to analyse what the future value of money I pay up front will be - there's a limit to the amount of research I'm prepared to do!
