Peugeot "warranty"

Has anyone had any problems when trying to get their peugeot repaired under warranty.

My turbo seal has recently started leaking and peogeot are refusing to repair it because my last service was performed by a garage that wasnt vat registered. Since when does being VAT registered have anything to do with their competency to perform a service?

I am not a happy bunny

I think it was part of the change in the law, which stopped manufacturers from insisting that services had to be performed by a main dealer for the warranty to be valid.

  • Thanks for that. Very interesting. I have logged a complaint with Peugeot. They say that the VAT-registered garage rule is in my service book. I have gone through it and there is no mention. Surley they have a duty of care and responsibility to make their conditions of warranty clearly known.

If i were to chose not to go to my NHS doctor and instead went to a faith healer down the road, its not up to my doctor to preempt me going there and letting me know the risks. Certainly if i asked him, i sure he would tell me.

Likewise, i would have thought it wouldnt be up to the manufacturer to tell you the risks of not using their dealers, it would be up to you to ask first?

Otherwise where would we draw the line?

Turning that around, is it not up to you to ensure you are meeting the terms of their warranty?

Ah, but are you still within your warranty period?

Well its quite simple - in the warranty book put in a line that says if you get your service done by an independent garage then make sure they are VAT registered.

I am not arguing that it is all our responsibility to ensure we meet the terms of the warranty, all I am saying is the conditions should be easily available i.e. included in the service and warranty book.

Yes I am until the end of next month. Isnt it funny how parts always fail just after the warranty - looks like this one failed early and now they are trying to get out of paying. Not good.

I think it has rather a lot to do with their competency. Any business turning over more than £73k p.a. has to be VAT registered. Think about it, what sort of garage could exist with a turnover of less than £73k? They would either have to be doing a lot of work off the books, or be some sort of part-time operation with very little in the way of equipment.

Also anyone can print off an invoice Joe Bloggs car servicing. The VAT registration is a form of proof that the garage exists.

Phone any local Pug dealer and they will readily tell you...
