    Indeed...

Then Landlord comes around and states "Very sorry, but there is NO fault with the toilet so I will not accept any liability" ?

Really can't see the landlord being responsible for this in any event.

Well, neither can I to be honest (See earlier posts).

But tampering with a system that the OP claims to be "Clueless" about rather than logging the fault immediately seems to be playing right into the landlords hands.

Oh forget it. Just sit there, do nothing and let the bill run up even higher.

    Who said do nothing ??

Does nobody have common sense these days?
No, most tenants don't. To listen to a toilet running for 6 months and then complaining about the water bill proves that does it not.
If the LL doesn't know how can he fix it?

    Har Har Har.

Anyway, after getting a plumber in it turns out it wasn't the toilet. He's as confused as we are so a Southern Water technician is coming down to take a proper look. Hopefully its just a fault in the meter or something else easy to identify.

    Thanks to the helpful responses.

OP turn everyhing off in your house and then inspect the meter and see if it is still turning.

If it is you have a leak (or your meter services the street :), which could be the case)
